RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES AND STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN MBO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA

CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Education is an instrument for national development. It is the best legacy a nation can give to her citizens especially the youth. This is because the development of any nation or community depends largely on the quality of education of such a nation. It is generally believed that the basis for any true development must commence with the development of the individual.

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
A developing country like Nigeria looks forward to scientific and technological education for the development of varieties of educational facilities as a strategy for achieving a better quality of education. This has resulted in the zeal for making school buildings no longer a mere shelter but a complete educational tool (Shittu, 2004). A well designed school with a wide array of teaching aids/instructional materials, adequate laboratory facilities, library facilities and comfortable classroom accommodation provide effective delivery of schools curriculum and are related to academic achievement of students.

According to Danesty (2004), producing high academic achievements and performance include good teaching, counseling, good administration, good seating arrangement and good building. Dilapidating buildings, lacking mental stimulating facilities that are characterized with low or no seating arrangement will also be destructive. Danesty, however, lamented that the innovative environment do stimulate head start learning and mental perception, not only that, it has also been proved that students that come from simulative environment with laboratory equipments or those that are taught with rich instructional aids, picture and allowed to demonstrate using, their functional peripheral nerves like eyes, hands and sense of taste performed better than those trained under theoretical and canopy of abstraction.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
In recent times, there has been inconsistent continuation of Government which has led to changes in educational practices at federal, state and local government levels. Frequent changes of ministers and commissioners of education by successive government coupled with the politicization of education has also brought about disparity in educational practices which caused differential academic performance and classroom functioning of both teachers and students.

In addition, there is persistence rise in the cost of providing educational facilities and services. Educational facilities and services. Existing facilities in schools have not been properly maintained due to high inflectional trend and lack of funds as such educational facilities with faults are unattended to. The success of any qualitative educational programme depends on the availability of good teaching aids/instructional materials, in view of this, the research seeks to inquire in to the validity of the belief that there is a relationship between educational facilities and students academic performance.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study was to determine the relationship between the educational facilities and academic performance of secondary school students in Mbo Local Government Area but more specifically:
i. To determine the relationship between teaching aids/instructional materials and academic performance.
ii. To determine the relationship between library facilities and academic performance.
iii. To determine the relationship between classroom buildings and the academic performance.
iv To determine the relationship between laboratory facilities and academic performance.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The essence of any research is for the improvement of the society at large. This study, therefore seeks to highlight the roles of educational facilities on the academic performance of secondary school students. The information will be useful to educational administrators who seek to make their school environment functional for teaching-learning situation.

The study will go a long way in enlightening educational administrators on the needs to be conscious of their role as the custodians and managers of educational resources. They will also appreciate the need to maintain the available resources.

The study will also create awareness for the provision of educational facilities for better teaching and learning. Finally, the research work will act as a source of literature and reference materials to students and members of the society.

1.5 RESEARCH QUESTIONS
The following questions were proposed:
1. Do teaching aids/instructional materials significantly relate to the academic performance of secondary school students in Mbo Local Government Area?
2. To what extent do library facilities relate to the academic performance of secondary school students?
3. What is the relationship between classroom building and academic performance of secondary school students in Mbo Local Government Area?
4. How does laboratory facilities relate to the academic performance of secondary school students in Mbo Local Government Area?

1.6 RESEARCH HYPOTHESES
The following hypotheses were proposed
1. There is no significant relationship between teaching/instructional materials and the academic performance of secondary school students in Mbo Local Government Area.?
2. There is no significant relationship between classroom structure and academic performance of secondary school students in Mbo Local Government Area?
3. There is no significant relationship between classroom structure and academic performance of secondary school students in Mbo Local Government Area?
4. There is no significant relationship between laboratory facilities and academic performance of secondary school student in Mbo Local Government Area?

1.7 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study on the relationship between the educational facilities and academic performance was faced with the following problems:
– High cost of transportation from Uyo to Oron Local Education Committee (LEC) and to the three selected secondary school in Mbo Local Government Area (Ebughu, Enwang and Udesi).
– Deplorable condition of the road to Udesi
– Limited time
– Financial constraints

1.8 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY
The study is restricted to identify the relationship between educational facilities like library, classroom building, laboratory and teaching aids/instructional, and student’ academic performance. It covers three selected public secondary schools in Mbo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS
The following terms were used in the context of the research.
Instructional Materials
This is defined as anything that carries information between the instructor (source) and the learner (receiver) (Lamb, 1969).

Questionnaire
A questionnaire is defined as a series of questions or statements presented in a written form to a student or group of students and to which they are expected to react in writing (Obodo, 2004).
