INFLUENCE OF PRINCIPALS AND STAFF RELATIONSHIP AND STUDENTS PERFORMANCE

ABSTRACT

The study was aimed at investigating and determining the administrative influence which the principals of selected secondary schools in Essien Udim Local Government Area exert on their subordinate teachers, which accordingly influence students’ performance. To achieve these objectives, four positive hypotheses and one null hypothesis were formulated to guide the research. The study population covered all the teaching staff in the 10 selected secondary schools in Essien Udim Local Government Area. Two hundred teachers including Vice-Principals were randomly selected as respondents. To test these hypothetically related research questions, questionnaires were constructed, validated and administered to the 200 teachers in 10 selected secondary schools in Essien Udim local Government Area. The items in the questionnaires measured effective communication pattern, motivation, delegation of authority, decision making and gender influence of administrative relationship of principals. The responses obtained through the instrument were described and analyzed using simple linear regression, t-test and correlation statistical analysis. Based on the findings, it was recommended among other things that, the post of school administration should be given to professional teachers who are experienced, knowledgeable, trusted and tested with acceptable and proven leadership, with a view to increasing the productivity capacity of teachers and thereby affect quality performance among students. It was recommended that the school administrators or principals should be regularly trained through seminars and workshops on modern principles, policies and leadership techniques in the management of school because teaching like medical profession should be adequately addressed by the appropriate authorities and his would encourage teachers to execute their duties effectively thereby influencing positive performance among the students.
