  • INTRODUCTION

 

  • BACKGROUND OF THESTUDY

 

Formwork is defined as temporary structure whose purpose is to provide support and containment for fresh concrete until it can support itself. It moulds the concrete to the desired shape and size and controls its position and alignment. The development of formworks is parallel with the growth of concrete construction throughout the 20th century. The advancement of technology, increase of population and the space limitation lead the way to construct high-rise buildings. But the task was not very easy at the beginning but now the man made the task easy by inventing new machinery and new techniques.

The most important factor in terms of cost, quality and speed in a high-rise building construction project is the type of the formwork used in the project. The first formwork type to be used is the conventional type formwork where the timber planks were supported on timber columns. With the advancement of technology it developed gradually and people used ply wood sheets instead of timber planks and steel pipes with jacks were used to support the ply wood. Then people invented small units of formworks and connectthe repeating units in the construction. The larger units were invented like formworks for slab panels, formworks for columns, beams…etc. when the same elements are repeating.  Then finally the whole system of formwork is made and initially the material used to it was steel and it was very heavy. Then the aim  was  to  reduce the weight of the system and the materials  for formwork have  extended  to aluminum, plastic, fiberglass…etc.

Contractors are in a belief that the system formwork is suitable only for super tall buildings as the initial cost of the system formwork is a bit high. Though the initial cost of the system formwork is a bit high it reduces the project duration and hence the total project cost. When considering the overall construction of a high-rise building the system formwork is much more economical that to all the other primary formwork types as it reduces the project duration, gives a smooth concrete surface and the repetitive use of the system. This is suitable for even for a five or six storey housings chemo of several houses.

1.2           STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

 

As a result of great urge for development, building construction is rapidly developing from simple to complex building; there have been observations from various sites where construction activities are going on, that formwork in building are not properly enhanced to their maximum potentials. As a result of this, construction and general organization of

formwork in some instances has been left under the supervision of unskilled carpenters who are inexperience in the job, as inadequate handling could result to wastage of materials, increase cost of labor and possibly defective structure and poor handling of formwork can also result to high cost and poor workmanship in an attempt of amend the damage work.

Buildings are becoming higher and higher nowadays in maximizing land use and investment return. Construction of residential developments are  considered as focal point of  the construction industry  in view of its huge labor contents and turnovers evolved due to its own nature of works and investments involved from the investors. Investors tend to build everything possible in a small piece of land to increase their return from their investment in the quickest possible manner

The aim of this project is to design and construct formwork for Columns, Beans and Slabs in high-rise buildings with a view to achieving the following objectives:

1.5           SCOPE OF STUDY

 Benin City is a large town in Nigeria. It is the capital city of Edo state and was chosen as a result of high concentration of construction activities targeting various categories of people including low, medium and high income earners with different preference and hence high likelihood of obtaining relevant information on design and construction of formwork for high-rise building construction and interview of state holders namely site engineers, saw-millers, timber dealers and onsite observation of formwork in building sites. Different formworks, engineered formwork system and re-usable plastic formwork respectively.

1.6           SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

In view of the fact that construction of building is a dynamic process, the design and construction of formwork in high-rise building will assist the various participants of building/building project within the construction industry in terms of the likely advantage and improvement of formwork system in high-rise building. The study will provide information and reveal various constructions to be considered and how to proffer solution to problems encountered during construction.

 

1.7           STUDY AREA

Benin City is the name of a city situated in the southern part of Nigeria. It is the capital of Edo State. Benin had been the capital of Benin kingdom that was established in the 13th century
