| WILLIAM JAMES PRAGMATIC PHILOSOPHY: IT’S APPLICATION IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OWERRI EDUCATION ZONE OF IMO STATE.

| The study was designed to investigate William James’ pragmatic philosophy with a view to determining its application in public secondary schools in Owerri Education zone of Imo state.The study adopted a descriptive survey design approach in which four research questions were posed and four null hypotheses tested.
The population of the study comprised of 43,600 subjects (2,600 teachers and 41,000 students) in the 65 public secondary schools in Owerri Education zone of Imo state A structured questionnaire titled William James’ pragmatic philosophy Application Questionnaire (WJPPAQ) was developed by the researcher which guided the study. 32 items were trail-tested on a sample of 5 teachers and 20 students in Nsukka Education zone of Enugu state. The data obtained were computed using Crobach Alpha method. This gave an overall score of 0.79. The four research questions were analyzed using mean and Standard Deviation, while the t-test statistics was used to test the four null hypotheses at 0.05 levels of significance. An overview of the overall results among others showed that practical teaching methods such as student- teacher interaction, the use of concrete teaching materials in teaching, the ability of students in handling laboratory materials on their own to find facts among others are all rated at either a very little extent or little extent Laboratories are to a little extent used in teaching in public secondary schools at Owerri educational zone of Imo state as envisaged by William James pragmatic philosophy. |
