IMPACT OF ADAPTIVE EXPLORATION METHOD ON STUDENTS’ NATURAL ENVIRONMENT ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ABIA STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract:

In the Abia metropolis’ Senior Secondary I pupils, the study examined the impact of the adaptive discovery method on students’ academic achievement in the natural environment. 5,000 students studying biology in 30 secondary schools throughout the city of Abia made up the study’s population. The researcher employed purposive selection to choose intact classes from each sampled school and stratified random sampling to choose the sample’s 500 pupils. Lesson plans, teaching modules, and the Ecology Performance Test are the instruments used for data collecting. The t-test procedure was used to test three hypotheses with a 0.07 alpha level. According to the analysis’s findings, students in the experimental group—those who were instructed via guided discovery—performed better than those in the control group, who were instructed using traditional methods. This shows that guided discovery method students outperformed traditional method students in terms of academic performance. Additionally, it was discovered that men students who were taught ecology through guided exploration outperformed their female counterparts. Additionally, students in private schools who were taught ecosystems through guided exploration outperformed those in public schools. It was suggested that biology teachers need in-service training to learn how to employ guided discovery to teach ecology and other biological concepts.
