EFFECTS OF AUDIO-VISUAL AIDS ON STUDENTS` ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN SOCIAL STUDIES IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BAUCHI STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study looked at how audio-visual aids affected students' academic performance in social studies in junior high schools in Bauchi State. To direct the researcher in the performance of the research, three objectives, research questions, and hypotheses were developed. A quasi-experimental methodology was used for the investigation, which had 164 participants in total. Data for the study were gathered throughout a six-week teaching-learning process. Every two weeks, both in the treatment and control groups, teacher-made achievement exams were employed as the data collection tools. The teaching-learning process was observed and recorded using a non-participant observation technique. To gauge the degree of collaboration among students in both the treatment and control groups, a structured interviewing technique was also used. Descriptive statistics (percentage, mean, standard deviation) and inferential statistics were used to examine the research hypotheses (Z-test and U-test). The main conclusions of the study showed that students who were taught social studies using audio-visual aids (Video show) had more comprehension than those who were taught using a chalk-and-talk teaching method. It also demonstrated that student demonstration was higher when taught social studies via the use of audio-visual aids (video show) than when taught through the use of chalk and discussion. It also showed that students' cooperation was better when taught social studies using audio-visual aids (video show) than when taught using a chalk-and-talk teaching method. Last but not least, the researcher suggested that the government immediately furnish schools with these audiovisual media that abstract. The utilization of the materials to maximize academic achievement should also be made clear to social studies teachers.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1.      Background to the Study

The multifaceted topic of social studies is covered in a few texts with certain clearly stated teaching aid standards in the Nigerian school curriculum. More times than not, this results in the study of just one particular topic in an integrated curriculum. In some circumstances, directives and exercises for students as well as for teachers are not offered, and in a few cases, such exercises and instructional guides are not given at all. Many educators believe that social studies are a straightforward topic that requires little to no preparation. To them, teaching social studies consists of just discussing a subject with students that may be taken from textbooks or looking at some images. 2004 (Talabi).

Sometimes a conversation regarding what was learned follows this, and students may then ask questions. All they can do is create their representations of the topics addressed. There is more to teaching social studies than this, which is why suitable teaching resources are required for the topic at all educational levels. Furthermore, teachers and students must both put in a lot of preparation before using approaches like inquiry, discussion, and role-playing simulation (both activity-based and historical). To effectively convey or elicit the required responses, it is necessary to use a variety of techniques (audio-visual aids) that will engage the recipient's senses on most, if not all, levels.

Resourcefulness is a prerequisite for a teacher to deliver excellent instruction. According to Aguekobuo (2004), the best method to do this is for the teacher to engage in human capacity building, which would require using a variety of teaching styles and techniques. Due to these factors, social studies teachers must be familiar with all audio-visual tools that will promote effective teaching and learning.
