INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION ON JSS STUDENTS’ AWARENESS OF STDS/HIV/AIDS IN KADUNA NORTH AND SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREAS
Abstract:
Human society is today characterized by various complexities which threaten the future of mankind. One of such is in health matters where various diseases are known to be common. The spread of the much dreaded STDs/HIV/AIDS is one of such concerns. This study aimed at finding the influence of social studies in creating awareness of STDs/HIV/AIDS among junior secondary school students of Kaduna state. The descriptive survey research method was used to gather data through a structured questionnaire from the respondents. A total of 980 students were considered out of a population of 10,200. Four objectives and three research questions were stated, three null hypotheses were stated for testing. It was found out that there was no significant difference among them on account of their sex, class and location of school, in their awareness. According to the result of the analysis majority of the respondents were of the opinion that there are many ways of contracting the diseases other than sex, these ways include blood transfusion, mother to baby among others. It was recommended that, among others, government at all levels should finance public awareness of STDs/HIV/AIDS through workshop, debates, seminars and billboards. Parents and teachers should meet regularly on how to discourage students from having pre-marital sexual contacts
