Abstract:

Women are considered to be the decision makers and health givers in the family across the globe, and hence their health condition is of concern to all including Nigerian print media. The study Press Coverage of Women Health Issues is a Comparative Analysis that is meant to examine the seriousness accorded to women health issues by Vanguard and Daily Trust newspapers as the Millennium Development Goal number five (5) says ―to improve maternal health before 2015‖. The study has four specific objectives among which include: to identify the extent of coverage of women health issues in the two Nigerian newspapers; to identify the level of prominence given to women health issues between the Daily Trust and Vanguard newspapers; to determine the kind of women health issues that has the highest coverage between Daily Trust and Vanguard newspapers and to find out the pattern of coverage of women health issues between Daily Trust and Vanguard newspapers. The study adopted Content Analysis method of research for a period of two (2) years (2011-2012). A total of 1,460 editions were purposively sampled and a coding sheet was used to generate data. The study relied on Agenda-setting theory and media development theory. The findings of the study revealed that women health issues were given limited coverage by print media in Nigeria. Against this, it was recommended that newspapers related to women health issues should be established in order to give specialized report on that aspect. Nevertheless, the existing newspapers should endeavor to provide adequate reportage on women health.
