Abstract:

This study centres around research conducteded on the United Nations Organisation as well as the principal organ, whose primary responsibility it is, as empowered by the Charter, in the maintenance of international peace and security. It is therefore, against this background that the historical perspective of the UN Peacekeeping operations is given, with the view to an understanding of the mechanism of conflict control. It will also, look at the political and legal considerations in the establishment of a peacekeeping operation as in the case of Rwanda and the Former Yugoslavia, which accordingly, have been carefully selected as representatives of conflicts in Africa and Europe. Nevertheless, this study aims to look at the various interpretations given by various peace theologians and the basis for a comparative analysis, in other to expose the differing role exhibited by the UN Security Council. At the same time, it will reveal the level of its commitment to world peace and security in the areas under review.
