DEBT PEONAGE AND NIGERIAN FOREIGN POLICY: 1986 —1998

Abstract:

Given the constraints Debt and economic crisis is posing on Nigeria, particularly, in its pursuit of a dynamic and viable foreign policy, it becomes imperative for a study like this. This study therefore attempts at answering, inter-alia, what constitute the forces behind Nigeria’s external debt? what challenge does this pose to Nigeria’s sovereignty and integrity? How does Nigeria pay these debt and at the same time pursue and promote viable economic programmes? and lastly, how freely can the country conduct her domestic and external policies given her level of indebtedness? The study, using the dependency and under-development paradigm via the modernisation theory approach, attempted to provide answers to the questions above, with a critical analysis of the impact of debt and economic crisis on Nigerian Foreign Policy orientation and posture. The study concludes with a recommendation on the possible way out.
