EVALUATION OF GREEN PLASTICS IN NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The combined properties of low cost, lightweight, and resistance to chemicals and corrosion has increased the use of plastic materials for packaging and storage purposes in preference to other materials. Consequently, there is a continued increase in their proportion in domestic solid wastes worldwide as well as the concern of their impacts on the environment. Most developed and developing countries have put in place and continue to improve their plastic waste disposal, collection, and recycling methods to reduce these impacts. In Nigeria with a population of about 186 million, there are little or no available data on the use of plastic materials in relation to city populations, their disposal, collection, and recycling methods. There are a few numbers of plastic waste recycling companies in a fewer number of cities and disposal practices for the greater percentage of the plastic wastes that are not captured for recycling possess immediate and future danger for the environment. This work reviews the consumption of plastics, its waste generation, collection, and treatment in Nigeria and a few selected countries. The problems associated with inadequate management of the wastes were emphasized and recommendations were proffered to not only highlight research and investment opportunities that are inherent in plastic waste management in Nigeria, but also provide a background for the formulation of sustainable regulatory policies by the government to address the problems

 

 

 

CHAPTER ONE

GENRAL INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND

There is no denying that plastics are evolving into a significant resource that is readily available in our world. However, when they are misused or handled improperly, issues are unavoidable. Plastic manufacture and use cause significant disposal issues, which result in unsightly appearances, fire risks, health risks, and energy constraints. Today, there are over a hundred plastic manufacturing facilities in Nigeria, creating tonnes of plastic goods that are widely used by people because they are simple to use, reasonably priced, and very handy.

Nigeria produces one of the greatest volumes of solid trash in Africa—an estimated 32 million tonnes per year and plastic waste makes up 2.5 million tonnes of that total (Obiezu, 2019).  Polytene bags, which are used for carrying groceries or packaging food products, are likewise made from plastic. The current global trend on managing wastes is to convert them to wealth. This brings the idea of moving waste from a state of unwanted materials to valuable and desirable materials that can be used in our daily life such as for domestic purposes. This is a new direction in waste management operations.

Plastic waste are to blame for the deterioration of the environment and agricultural land, as well as the unintended depletion of important earth resources, particularly oil (Sugii, 2008). This has now become a huge environmental and agricultural productivity concern. Discarded Plastic waste that have already made their way into the field are not only inconvenient for farmers, but also dangerous. The so-called developed global society’s environment would deteriorate as a result of this.

Babayemi (2009 ) reported that urban centers in Nigeria collect less than half of the plastic waste produced and 95 percent of that amount is either indiscriminately thrown away at various dumping sites on the periphery of urban centres, or at a number of so-called temporary sites, typically empty lots scattered throughout the cities. To successfully reduce plastic waste, we must reduce our consumption of plastic. This entails changing our daily routines, such as not using plastic when a better alternative exists and only using plastic when absolutely required. Plastic waste can be reused or repurposed for a variety of uses. It is vital to consider how things can be utilized before discarding them.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

It is important to comprehend how to protect the health of Nigerian communities by following best practises for waste management and recycling plastic garbage. Poor process management by the government has been held responsible for the unchecked disposal of waste items in many developing nations, including Nigeria, and the unregulated burning of materials like used plastic rubber and clean water sachets (Onwughara, Chukwu, Alaekwe & Albert, 2013). Therefore, it is essential to manage plastic garbage properly and recycle it in order to ensure Nigeria’s environment is sustainable. EVALUATION OF GREEN PLASTICS IN NIGERIA

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main aim of the research work is to evaluate Green plastic in Nigeria.  Other specific objectives of the study are:

  1. to determine the methods used in plastic waste recycling in Nigeria
  2. to determine the effect of plastic waste on the environment.
  3. to investigate on the factors affecting plastic waste recycling in Nigeria
  4. to determine the benefits of the green plastic practices in Nigeria.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The research questions for the study are:

  1. What are the methods used in plastic waste recycling in Nigeria?
  2. What is the effect of plastic waste on the environment?
  3. What are the factors affecting plastic waste recycling in Nigeria?
  4. What are the benefits of green plastic practices in Nigeria?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study on circular economy; looking at transforming plastic waste recycling into Nigeria economy will be of immense benefit to the plastic industries in Nigeria in the sense that the study will discuss the types plastic waste management strategies  and the effect of plastic waste recycling on Nigeria economy. The study will serve as a repository of information to other researchers that desire to carry out similar research on the above topic. Finally the study will contribute to the body of existing literature on plastic waste recycling.

1.6 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work
