MODIFICATION OF GUM ARABIC

Abstract:

The physical and chemical modifications of gum arabic have been attempted. The physical method involved the p1asticization of gum arabic with sorbitol, glycerol and ethylene glycol . The chemical method was by acid hydrolysis, acetolysis and acetate formation. The films Cast from the modified and untreated gumarabic so1utions were subjected to stress-strain analyses and bond strength tests. It was found that the modulus of rigidity and ultimate tensile stress for the chemically modified gum arabic samp1es were generally higher than for the physical1y modified samples. However, the physically modified samples had the higherstrain at break values. In all, the strain at break values of modified samples were found to be higher than for the untreated gum arabic sample, implying tougher films for treated gum arabic samp1es than for untreated ones. Of the physically modified samples, the sorbitol plasticized gum arabic (with 3%. sorbitol) was found to have the best adhesive properties, while for the chemically modified samples, the 6%. acetolysed sample was found to have the best adhesive properties.
