QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF HADASSA STEEL

ABSTRACT

An assessment of the quality of various sizes of steel and the management of the steel rolling company producing such product, as it affects quality of steel, was undertaken. Various steel samples were obtained directly from the company and physical test were carried out on them. Field survey was also undertaken so as to get information on the company especially as regards to factors affecting the quality of its products. Results of test as well as survey of the management of the company shows that poor management results into poor quality control and inferior product. Most of the High tensile steel reinforcement bars failed as values of characteristic strength of 270, 355 and 395 N/mm2 are far below the values specified by BS 4449:1970, CP 110 and BS 8110: 1984. Out of six different diameters produced by the company, only one has a value of characteristic strength of 309.4 N/mm2 as compared to 250 N/mm2 provided in BS 4449. Most samples passed the test on deviation on cross-sectional area as samples A,C,D,E and F have average effective cross-sectional area of 467, 190, 109, 76.7 and 75.7 mm2 this represent average percentage deviation of – 5,-5.6, -3.5, -2.3 and -3.6 percent which is not up to the maximum deviation of ±8 as contained in Bs 4449: 1970, While sample B with an average percentage deviation of – 9.4 fails. v Most samples also failed to satisfy the standard requirement on deviation on Nominal mass, deviation on nominal density and specific gravity. Cracks were observed during Bend test on the 25 millimeters diameter samples, as such they are deemed to have failed the test.
