COMPARAISON DES ASPECTS VERBAUX EN FRANÇAIS ET IGBO

Abstract:

We have embarked on a contrastive study of the verbal aspects of French and Igbo languages. Igbo is the spoken language of Igbo people, it is also one of the three major Nigerian languages and is predominantly spoken in the five Eastern States: Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo. It is equally spoken in some parts of: Delta, Edo and Rivers States of Nigeria. However, we limit our study to the central igbo considering the numerous igbo dialects. We approach this study in the most scientific way possible. Different categories of verbal aspects are examined in the course of this study. This study considers also the tenses in these two languages considering the fact that they help in determining the verbal aspect. This is done through the use of contrastive and comparative approaches. The two languages obtain their verbal aspects through the means of verbs. It is discovered that French and Igbo verbal aspects differ in some ways. Despite the fact that the progressive verbal aspect is realized in Igbo through na, French does not respect this rule in the actualisation of the same form of verbal aspect.
