Abstract:

This study looks at Language Choice and Use among English speaking bi- or multilinguals in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Our aim is to find out the linguistic repertoire of speakers and the pattern of language use in different domains as well as to determine whether or not speakers are constrained by socio-cultural factors in their choice and use of language. Our approach is functionalist and empirical with some theoretical significance since the study is concerned with language choice in a multilingual community. In addition, it is a study of languages in contact and therefore throws more light on issues of bi- multilingualism which themselves have implications for pedagogy. We applied an eclectic approach in the analysis of the recorded spoken data especially in order to test how the various theoretical frameworks could be applied to the kind of data we collected. In addition, the questionnaire like the recorded discourse, was designed to find out whether socio-cultural factors determine speakers’ choice of language in various settings.
