EFFECT OF SOWING DATE AND MOISTURE STRESS ON DRY SEASON MAIZE (Zea mays L.)

Abstract:

A field experiment was conducted at the Irrigation Research Station, Ahmadu Bello University, Kadawa, during the 1983/84 dry seaabn (September – May) to study the Effect of Sowing Date and Moisture Streee at various growth periods of maize. The treatments consisted of six sowing dates starting from 23 September 1903 at monthly interval, ending 23 February, 1904 and three moisture stress treatments consisting of unstressed (normal irrigation of 65mm depth of water was applied at weekly interval), moisture stress at flowering and moisture stress at grain development. Earlier sowings i.e. September and October were superior to late sowings. The maximum groin yield of 71G7 kg/ha was produced when maize was sown on 23 October- Delaying sowing until December, January and February reduced grain yield by 27.6, 33.0, 72.1 and 42.0%, especially compared to October sowing.
