ABSTRACT

Military access is the most secure access provision and needs to be kept that way, considering national security issues. Usual military authentication and authorization techniques consist of one-way authentication techniques with just one form of authentication, namely a password, smart card, or biometric. Here we propose a two-stage authentication/authorization technique for secured military access to authorised personnel. The first stage is a card scanning system; each authorised person must have a smart card. On card scanning, the system also asks for an additional 4-digit code associated with it, on entering the right code, the personnel go to the next stage of authentication. In the next stage, the system generates a one-time password and sends it to the mobile phone registered to that particular card scanned. The personnel now needs to enter the password sent on his mobile phone for the next stage of authentication. After he enters, the right OTP user is granted access inside. The system is a very secure access mechanism for military and other secure authorization fields. The system may be further improved by adding face recognition authentication of third-stage authentication. The acceptance testing process encompasses unit testing, integration testing, and system testing, while a set of test cases and test criteria ensures the system meets security, performance, and reliability standards. The system recommended future enhancements to include integrating biometric verification, centralizing access control across multiple facilities, real-time access monitoring, and strengthening user authentication with multi-factor methods. These recommendations aim to provide valuable insights for developers, ensuring the system remains at the forefront of secure access control technology. This research serves as a roadmap for building and enhancing military access systems, underpinned by industry standards and best practices.

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

  • Background of the Study

Access control is a critical aspect of maintaining the security and integrity of military facilities, where sensitive information, high-value assets, and the safety of personnel are paramount. Traditional security measures have evolved over the years, but modern security threats demand advanced and adaptable access control systems. The concept of using smart cards for access control has gained prominence due to their convenience and robust security features. Smart cards are embedded with microprocessors and data storage, allowing for the secure storage of user information. These cards can be customized to include biometric data, such as fingerprints or retinal scans, further enhancing security. To complement smart card technology, the use of One-Time Password (OTP) verification has become increasingly popular. OTPs are unique, temporary codes that add an extra layer of security by ensuring that each access attempt requires a fresh and unique code.

The military access system using card scanning with OTP verification leverages these advanced technologies to provide a comprehensive solution for controlling access to military facilities. Smart cards hold user credentials and other pertinent information, while OTPs ensure that each access attempt is highly secure and traceable. This combined approach enables military personnel, contractors, and visitors to access restricted areas with confidence, knowing that stringent security measures are in place. Moreover, the development and implementation of such a system go beyond physical security. It addresses the need for precise access control, logging and auditing of access attempts, and the capacity for real-time monitoring and reporting. The military access system not only fortifies security but also enhances operational efficiency and management by providing a secure and reliable method for controlling access to military facilities.

As technology continues to advance, the military access system serves as an exemplar of how modern solutions can be applied to strengthen security protocols and safeguard the interests of the armed forces. It is within this context that the System Requirements Specification (SRS) is prepared, aiming to ensure the clear and effective deployment of the military access system using card scanning with OTP verification. This document forms the foundation for understanding the system’s functional and non-functional requirements, facilitating proper testing procedures, and setting the stage for future enhancements that will further bolster the security and efficiency of access control within military facilities. Two-factor authentication using a password and smart card could reduce the risk of the use of a password alone. Recently, Chen et al. (2022) proposed a two-factor remote user authentication protocol using passwords and smart cards and provided the criteria for authentication protocols. They claimed their protocol is secure against certain known attacks. However, Liu (2013) asserted that the Chen scheme is still vulnerable to off-line password guessing attacks, privileged administrator attacks, key control attacks, and lack of forward security.

To solve these security problems, we propose a smart card and One-Time Password (OTP) verification as a modern approach to address this security concern. The military access system using card scanning with OTP verification provides a robust solution to manage access to military facilities, thereby enhancing security and control.

1.2 Statement of Problem

The existing access control systems at military facilities require modernization to meet the evolving security demands and efficiently manage access to restricted areas. Traditional methods, such as physical keys and basic identification, are no longer sufficient to ensure the security and integrity of military installations. Moreover, the increasing complexity of security threats necessitates the implementation of a comprehensive and adaptable access control solution. The absence of an integrated system that combines smart card scanning and OTP verification in military facilities poses significant security risks. Unauthorized access, data breaches, and a lack of real-time monitoring are some of the challenges that need to be addressed to enhance the security and control of access to these critical areas.

1.3 Aims and Objectives

The purpose of this System Requirements Specification (SRS) is to provide a comprehensive overview of the military access system that utilizes card scanning with OTP verification. This document is designed to detail the essential features, functionalities, and requirements of the system. It serves as a guiding document for the development and implementation of the military access system, ensuring clarity and alignment among stakeholders involved in its creation and deployment.

The specific objectives include:

  1. a) To design an integrated system architecture that incorporates card scanning, OTP generation, and verification.
  2. b) To develop a prototype of the military access system using suitable hardware and software components.
  3. c) To evaluate the performance, security, and user satisfaction of the developed system through testing and user feedback.

1.4 Scope of the System

The military access system is specifically designed to control access to military facilities, buildings, and restricted areas. Its core function is to employ card scanning and OTP verification to validate and authenticate individuals seeking entry. This system will be deployed across various military facilities and will serve military personnel, contractors, and visitors, ensuring that only authorized individuals gain access to the secured areas.

The military access system consists of two main components: a card reader and an OTP generator. The card reader is responsible for scanning smart cards, extracting user information, and transmitting this data to the system. The system, in turn, generates a unique OTP and sends it to the user’s device. This OTP serves as a temporary and secure access credential, allowing users to gain entry to the designated facility or area. Access control is a fundamental component, ensuring that only individuals with valid OTPs and appropriate user information are granted access, thus bolstering security measures.
