Secure Backup Software System

Abstract

The “Secure Backup Software System” is a comprehensive cloud-based solution designed for efficient data backup and recovery. The system architecture consists of three main modules: the File Uploading Module, File Recovery Module, and Main Cloud Server, along with Remote Backup Servers. Users can easily upload their files to the cloud through the File Uploading Module, where replication and erasure coding techniques ensure data redundancy and integrity. In the event of data loss, the File Recovery Module employs an Enriched Genetic Algorithm (EGA) to efficiently retrieve lost data from the backup cloud servers. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system exhibits excellent performance and reliability. It enables rapid file uploads, ensuring users’ data is promptly and securely backed up to the cloud. Data retrieval times are satisfactory, allowing users seamless access to their backed-up files. The Enriched Genetic Algorithm (EGA) proves to be highly effective in data recovery, successfully restoring lost data from backup cloud servers in diverse scenarios. Despite limitations, the research presents valuable insights into the system’s effectiveness, offering a robust foundation for cloud-based data backup and recovery solutions.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

In today’s digital age, data is at the core of various personal and business activities. Users and organizations increasingly rely on digital files, documents, and data for everyday tasks, making data protection and backup crucial. Data loss, whether due to hardware failures, accidental deletions, or cyber-attacks, can lead to significant consequences, including financial losses, privacy breaches, and disruptions in business operations.

To address these challenges, cloud-based data backup solutions have emerged as a popular choice, offering scalability, cost-effectiveness, and remote accessibility [1] . Leading cloud storage services like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and Microsoft Azure provide offsite data storage options, minimizing the risk of data loss due to localized events. However, traditional cloud-based backup systems may encounter challenges in effectively managing large data volumes and ensuring swift data recovery [2] .

This project therefore intends to design a “Secure Backup Software System” is proposed. This system aims to provide users with a reliable, efficient, and secure cloud-based backup and data recovery solution. The system architecture consists of three main modules: the File Uploading Module, the File Recovery Module, and the Main Cloud Server, along with Remote Backup Servers.

1.2 Problem Statement

Traditional data backup and recovery methods often rely on manual processes, which can be time-consuming and error-prone. Additionally, conventional backup systems may lack the robustness and scalability required to handle large volumes of data efficiently. As a result, there is a need for an automated and secure backup software system that can provide reliable data storage, quick retrieval, and efficient recovery.

The “Secure Backup Software System” aims to address these challenges by utilizing cloud-based storage and advanced data replication techniques. By employing the Enriched Genetic Algorithm (EGA) for data recovery, the system aims to efficiently restore lost data from backup cloud servers.

1.3 Research Objectives

The main objectives of this research are as follows:

  1. To design and implement the “Secure Backup Software System” with three core modules: File Uploading Module, File Recovery Module, and Main Cloud Server.
  2. To evaluate the performance and efficiency of the system through experimental analysis, measuring key metrics such as file upload speeds, data retrieval times, and data recovery using the EGA algorithm.
  3. To assess the system’s availability, reliability, and scalability through stress testing under heavy user loads.

1.4 Scope and Limitations

The scope of this research focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of the “Secure Backup Software System.” The research is limited to a simulated cloud environment using industry-standard cloud storage services such as Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage. The system implementation is in Python and deployed on a high-performance virtual machine.

While the research aims to provide insights into the effectiveness of the proposed system, the security analysis will not cover advanced security measures beyond basic data encryption and access controls
