CHAPTER ONE

1.0  Introduction

This work is a practical project. It entails lighting a play directed by a student majority in play directing. As a Technical Theatre major, I chose to specialize in stage lighting designed for play production because I believe lighting is one of the most important elements in modern theatrical production. The work also entails lighting the play, Saro  the Musical written by Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters, and directed by Makinde Adeniran The importance of lighting design to theatrical productions has influenced the project title ‘’Light as illumination and effect’’. Since this aspect of stage lighting is not been given adequate treatment in the Department, I hope to use this project to highlight the technical impact light and effects play in stage production.

1.1 Justificaiton of Study

I have to work on lighting and effects, which is very important and vital aspect of stage production because no project work has been done on lighting, and effects especially as an aspect of stage production. What I have set to achieve in this work is to use this project to document and create awareness as to what light and effect can do as it concerns stage production. It is expected that a work such as this will help to create awareness on the technical aspect of stage production.

1.2 Scope and Limitations

This work shall concern itself basically with lighting the play “Saro  the Musical written by Mrs Bolanle Austen-Peters and directed by Makinde Adeniran the emphasis will be on lighting and effect. It is worthy to note that this project is limited to lighting and effect in the play Saro  the Musical. Since this is project, reference will be made to the use of lighting design for the production.

1.3 Research Method

Information assembled for this project is derived chiefly from my practical experience in technical theatre, coupled with library research.

1.4 Definition of Terms

In this section, I have provided a definition of the key words which have been used in this work. They include light, Dimmer and gel.

LIGHT

According to Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary, light is ‘’the natural force that makes things visible, the light of a sun, lamp or fire’’.

DIMMER

The Dimmer is an electrical device which controls the amount of current flowing into a lighting instrument thus increasing or decreasing the intensity of the light.

GEL

It is a plastic substance that is used in light to create effects.

1.5 Summary

In this chapter, I have introduced the nature of my practical final year project, which involves lighting and providing effects for the production of “Saro  the Musical”. I have equally stated why I chose to specialize in technical Theatre, and lighting s my field. I also sated how I gathered information for the project, indicated the scope and limitation of the work, and defined the key terms used in the work.
