FABRICATION OF METALLIC BOOKSHELF

ABSTRACT

In our society, today reading and writing have taken their role as a way of measuring human knowledge.  Knowledge could only be obtained successively by the use of books for research but unfortunately, because of hard times, readers have because very expensive. This has called for the preservation of books already purchased, whether in the public library school, or household so that they can use for future reference.  This could only be done by stocking books systematically on a bookshelf whereby they can be free from rats, insects, and other things that could destroy books. Our contribution towards this development is the design and manufacture of a bookshelf that will be economically cheap and at the same time meet up its demands. Bookshelf could be made with metals or wood and they could be attached against the wall or they could be made standing on the floor.  Our bookshelf shall be of the metal type standing on the floor.

 CHAPTER ONE

1.1            INTRODUCTION

A bookshelf is a device with partitions used for save-guarding books and files in offices, libraries, and homes. A bookshelf can be wooden, metal, or glass.  They could also be designed in such a way that they could be dismountable or undismountable.  In our project, we decided to design and fabricate an undismountable metallic bookshelf. Among all the bookshelves, the undismountable metallic bookshelf has the longest lift span because of its rigidity, quantity of material, and its ability to withstand heavy loads.  In other words, the constant loosening and coupling of the parts lead to the weakness of the bolt and nut, thus subjecting the shelf to vibration. Our project the undismountable bookshelf was fabricated with a variety of materials.  The types of materials involved are mild steel square pipes (25mm x 25mm) mild steel sheet metal, etc. in this, the square pipes were used in the fabrication of the framework The essence of creating steel fame work with pipes is for it to withstand the stress that will be developed due to the weight of the material and loads or each partition. In fabrication, the frame was first erected before covering it with a mild steel sheet.  The mass and volume of the book to be contained by each partition were considered before they were erected, so certain experiments were carried out which will be discussed in detail in this report.

1.2     DESCRIPTION OF THE METAL BOOKSHELF

The metal bookshelf is made up of the following parts and components. (i)                The framework (ii)             The side (iii)           The top (iv)           The stand (v)             The partitions

THE FRAME on FABRICATION OF METALLIC BOOKSHELF

The frame is the skeleton of the whole shelf, it is made of 25mm square pipe and 25mm (1) by 50mm (2) rectangle pipe.  The frame was first erected together using welding before the sheet was covered at the back, side, top, and partitions. The frame was designed to withstand the stress that will be developed on it due to the weight of sheet metal and the load on each partition.

THE SIDE The side is made up of mild steel 0.8mm thick with a height of 1700mm and a width of 700mm.  It was welded to the frame (at an angle of 900).

THE TOP OR PLANE

The top is made up of a mild steel sheet of thickness 0.8mm and 1700mm height by 600mm width and it is also welded diagonally to the frame. (I.e. at angle 900)

THE STAND

The stand was made from a rectangle pipe and a square pipe, that is, the two back stands were made from a square pipe while the two front stands were made from a square pipe.  This stand was extended from the framework to enable a stronger gripe, avoid bending, and breaking, and also to avoid slipping.

THE PARTITIONS

The partitions were designed to be able to contain a large number of books. They are measured 360mm in height, 1222mm in length, and 470mm in breadth.  The material used for the partitions was a mild steel plate of 1.2mm thick welded to the partitions’ framework. The volume of the partition = l x b x h = 1222 x 470 x 360 = 206762400mm

AREA OF PARTITION

= 2(lb + bh + lh) = 2(1222 x 470) + (470 x 360) + (1222 x 360) =2(574340)+ (169200) + (439920) =2(1183460) = 2366920mm.1.3

   PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT

The purpose of this project is to design and construct a metallic bookshelf capable of containing different standard, size books. The design should be able to compete favorably with other accepted standards.

1.4     SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The shelf is of four (4) partitions constructed with metal which is the best material for the construction of engineering device of this type and in each partition distance the distance = is 410mm which bring it to a total of 16 inches.
