Dynamic semi-structured meshes for fast numerical simulation of Multi-Phase Modelling in Oil and Gas

In order to dramatically increase the Multiphase-Fluidity project’s speed, this project will create and apply a semi-structured mesh technique. Modern technologies for multiphase Navier-Stokes flow simulation, such as unstructured dynamic mesh optimization and high-order element approaches, are incorporated into Multiphase-Fluidity. There are many uses for multiphase fluidity, including the simulation of jets, droplets, boiling reactors, pipe flow, mixing tanks, etc. Multiphase-Fluidity currently use meshes that are entirely unstructured. To respect the complicated geometries that naturally occur in engineering applications, flexible meshing technology is needed (e.g. Fig. 1). However, due to the indirect addressing required by unstructured meshes, numerical simulations employing them are fundamentally slower than those using structured models. In Multiphase-Fluidity, this is somewhat offset by dynamic adaptive mesh optimization, which lowers the number of components while retaining the required resolution to simulate the physics accurately.
