THE INFLUENCE OF  COORDINATION IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AMONG PRIVATE SCHOOL (A CASE STUDY OF ESTATE PRIMARY SCHOOL, OGBA LAGOS)

ABSTRACT

 

This research attempted to analyse the The influence of  Coordination in Educational Administration among Private School (A Case Study of Estate Primary School, Ogba Lagos)”.Various methodologies were employed to gather data. The sample population comprised 106 respondents who were selected using both simple random and purposive sampling techniques. To start with, survey was conducted to sixty (60) pupils to obtain information on how coordination affects educational administration. In addition, thirty (30) teachers were surveyed and interviewed. Furthermore, District Education Officers (DEO), Zonal School Curriculum Inspectors (ZSCI) and eight (8) school heads were interviewed to understand how coordination influenceseducational administration. Lastly, focused group discussion was conducted to parents to assess their involvement.  This study concludes that poor educational administration in the prevailing in primary schools is a result of an educational system that produces predetermined poor results.

1.0  INTRODUCTION

 

1.1    Overview

An introduction is the first part of research report which discusses the background to the problem, statement of the problem, objectives, research questions, significance of the study, scope of the study and limitations of the study.

 

1.2 Background to the Problem

Education is the bed-rock of any nation‘s defense. Education is that process that helps to develop the whole man physically, mentally, socially and technologically to enable him to function effectively in any environment in which he may find himself. (Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2009). Ogundele, (2000) observed that no nation rises above the level of its education.Consequently, educational planning has increasingly become an important administrative component in education where formulated policies are translated into programmes and implemented to achieve specific stated objectives.

Coordination involves guiding people towards the attainment of educational objectives. By these, school principals need the cooperation of all staff members consecutively towards the implementation of school policies aimed towards the attainment of educational goals. The directing process also involves coordinating, controlling, supply and use of resources both human and material effectively and efficiently to achieve desired results.

Supervision of staff as an important function of management is to enable checks and balances as well as to avoid distortions and deviations from stipulated rules and regulations designed to achieve the goals of the school. Supervision of staff and students calls for a daily routine check on the performance of teachers as well as students to ascertain the appropriate implementation of policies or decisions. The school manager will need to supervise the work which is being done, ensuring that activities are carried out in line with agreed standards and taking steps to correct envisaged problems in the process of school administration.

In spite of the managerial functions involved for effective educational administration, effective coordination process has been greatly distorted by the school leadership based on the fact that various school administrators come with varied opinions, beliefs and ideas on the involvement of and participation of staff members in the educational administration process. This means that, effective coordination is a significant component of school administration since it ensures that school heads achieve remarkable result in the management of schools.

 

1.3 Statement of the Problem

Despite the considerable effort made by the Ministry of Education and other relevant stakeholders to increase enrolment and improve primary education through effective coordination, it has been discovered that overall educational quality in Nigeria is in decline. Many scholars, policy makers and other researchers have resolved to address problems that hinder educational progress by conducting research on different attributes but still there are serious weaknesses on the pupils’ educational administration in primary schools that require urgent and sustained attention.

This study was mainly concerned with investigating “The influence of  Coordination in Educational Administration among Private School (A Case Study of Estate Primary School, Ogba Lagos State “. The aim was to find out the strategic vision of school development in enhancing educational administration, to identify administrative roles of school heads, to evaluate the supervision of the teaching process in enhancing educational administration and how the relationship with the community and other educational stakeholders affect educational administration. The study therefore, was carried out to fill the gap that exists in education context especially on the influence of coordination in educational administration in primary schools in Nigeria.

 

1.4 Objectives of the Study

1.4.1 Main Objectives

The main objective of this study was to assess “The influence of  Coordination in Educational Administration among Private School (A Case Study of Estate Primary School, Ogba Lagos State “.

 

1.4.2 Specific Objectives

• Find out the strategic vision of school development in enhancing educational administration
• Identify administrative roles of school heads towards enhancing educational administration
• Evaluate how effective supervision of the teaching process in the school contributes in promotingeducational administration.

 

• Determine the relationship between a school and community in enhancing  educational administration

 

1.5 Research Questions

• How does the strategic vision of school development contribute to the achievement of educational administration in primary schools?

 

• In what ways do the head teachers’ administrative roles contribute in enhancing educational administration?

 

• How does the supervision of teaching process contribute in promotingeducational administration in primary schools?

 

• How does the relationship between school and a wider community enhance educational administration in primary schools?

 

1.6 Significance of the Study

The undertaking of the study was to investigate “The influence of  Coordination in Educational Administration among Private School (A Case Study of Estate Primary School, Ogba Lagos State “.

The findings of the study would help in  the improvement in school administration was expected to create favourable environment for the pupils to learn comfortably and effectively. As a result, quality education would be provided in schools and yield the expected outcome of education. Pupils would pass their examinations and leave schools well prepared with all necessary skills to enable them thrive in difficult social and economic environment. Also they would be able to contribute effectively in the social transformation and be good citizens. On top of that, the findings of the study could be used by different education stakeholders such as the government, community, influential people, political leaders, teachers and parents to look for solutions that would help to overcome challenges that face our educational system.  Therefore, study findings and suggested solutions would be very useful to educational administrators, policy makers, decision makers, community, NGOs and any agencies dealing with education.

 

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study dealt only with the The influence of  Coordination in Educational Administration among Private School (A Case Study of Estate Primary School, Ogba Lagos)”. The study was limited only to Estate Primary schools. However, to gain a broad perspective on the study, school heads from other primary schools in Lagos were used in the study.

 

1.8 Limitations of the Study

The researcher encountered various challenges during the research process. They included insufficient funds for stationery, transport and buying other important materials. Also, there was shortage of time in conducting the study, and at the same time performing other duties. However, the shortage of fund was solved by receiving assistance from the bank in terms of loan to cover those expenses. This helped a lot since the required data were sufficiently collected and made the research findings of this study more reliable. On the other hand, the researcher had to extend time of conducting research to ensure that time constraint was overcome and the research findings become useful.
