ASSESSMENT OF THE INCORPORATION OF RICE MARKETS IN MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The goal of this study was to ascertain how the rice markets in Enugu State were integrated. Socioeconomic traits, current market channels and structure, market integration for rice, structural factors influencing market integration for rice, and issues impacting rice traders in the state are all taken into account. For the study, 40 wholesalers and 40 retailers were chosen. With the use of descriptive statistics, co-integration analysis, and market integration function, both primary and secondary data were gathered and examined. The findings indicated that the majority of rice dealers were between the ages of 30 and 49, had low levels of education, and had between 6 and 10 years of marketing experience. The variables were integrated of the order zero, one, and stationary at first differencing, according to the Unit Root Test (0). Rice is sold in Although the study region was integrated, the level of integration was modest. The Error Correction Model’s coefficient, which was negative and significant at the 1% level, was -0.0061872. With an R2 (Coefficient of Determination) of 0.78, the Market Integration Function was able to demonstrate that the independent variables could account for 78% of the changes in rice prices between rural and urban rice markets. The extent of market integration was greatly influenced by the cost of transportation, tolls, processing, and storage. The biggest issues the rice dealers faced were a lack of funding (100%), high transportation costs/poor roads, and subpar local rice compared to imported rice. Facilities for transportation, processing, storage, communication, and finance should be offered in order to increase the level of market integration.
