ABSTRACT

Instances of ghost, demons, magic, clairvoyance, augury, séance, necromancy, among other twists of phenomena that each challenges the ordinary perception of reality are frequent features in Igbo locale specific film narratives. This study explores Anosike’s A Ghost Story and Nnakaihe’s Oil Business as examples of Nollywood typical creations in these regards, which feature two basic forms of spiritual entities: ghost and demon, along with their attributes of social and emotional behaviours and other mysterious events thereof. Moreso, the study critically analyses them as social construction of reality using the theory of magical realism, leads-Hurwitz social construction of reality and also Clifford Geetz’s contextual interpretive analytical method to assess their consonance with historical and subsisting Igbo worldviews on such preternatural realities. Furthermore, this study contextualizes application of the theory of magical realism and interrogates its agreement with representations of the supernatural in the focus films. The finding and conclusion are that the Igbo worldview has valid philosophical depth and that the focus films exhibit this inclination.
