NEGOTIATING RELIGION AND PRAGMATICS OF HUMOUR, A PEDAGOGICAL ANALYSIS OF TWO NIGERIAN STAND UP ACTS
ABSTRACT
The research undertakes a pragmatics analysis of the “evolving evangelical angle of Nigerian stand up comedy” (olatunde 29) through the stand up routines of Olufemi Michael Olusesi and Bennett Chinedu Daniel. The research posits humour as a medium that can be employed pedagogically by comedian i.e. for evangelical purpose in churches in order to attract more coverts. As a result, the study seeks to investigate how Nigerian comedians use humour to negotiate religion and why Nigerian comedians use humour to negotiate religion? Therefore, the research will examine the processes employ by the comedians in order to negotiate religion. This includes the communicative strategies used by the comedians in order to engage the audience and the pragmatics mechanism used to create humour by the comedians. In order to achieve the research objectives, the discourse adopted critical discourse analysis as its preferred theoretical framework. Critical discourse analysis will enable us to probe the communicative strategies and mechanism use to elicit humour from the audience, i.e. how the comedians structure their verbal and non verbal language in order to achieve their objectives. To this end the study satirizes the misconceptions in the society by exemplifying the excesses seen in present day churches.
