TOWARDS THE REVIVAL AND SUSTENANCE OF INDIGENOUS AFRICAN PERFORMANCE FORMS. A STUDY OF IMOKA.
ABSTRACT
African cosmology is reflected in their arts, their literature, their festival and their drama. Among the people, abound numerous festivals, masquerade performances, etc. that have continued to showcase the people’s cosmology. Indigenous African Performances are vehicle through which the people entertain themselves with great aesthetic and utilitarian functions. A lot have been written on festivals and traditional African Drama and Theatre with numerous critics and scholars expressing different views on the nature, structure, matter and content, style of African drama as differentiated with Western drama and Asian drama. Consequent upon globalization, civilization and modernity, African indigenous performances have evolve in order to meet with newer realities, their mode, structure and form has been suited to meet the demands of the globalised world. This study therefore x-rays in an investigative manner the glamorous performance of the Awka people, in the face of changing trends. More so, the study seeks to propose ways by which the potentials of Indigenous African Performance can be maximized in the present age. Case Study, Content Analysis Approach and Observational Research Method are adopted for realization of research objective using both the Omniscient theory and Social Constructionism Theory as theoretical framework. In order to achieve the interpretative essence needed in this study, the ethnographic framework will be used on content analysis of the performance especially in light of changing realities. The objective is bipartite, which is to examine the Imoka masquerade performance of the Awka people while proposing ways that it can be maximized to achieve its potentials in the 21st century.
