ABSTRACT

The major purpose of this study was to find out the influence of art education on fashion trends among female students of five Federal Universities in South Eastern Nigeria. Specifically, the study helped to find out what undergraduate students use textile materials and accessories they select for; ascertain strategies Art Education can use to restore fashion morality among female undergraduate students; determine the means by which Art Educational values could become good aspects of change on fashion trends in the daily lives of female students; ascertain the most appropriate methods of employing Art Education in curtailing female students’ use of indecent dresses; verify the most innovative and creative ways Art Education could influence textile wears and accessories among female student of five Federal Universities in South Eastern Nigeria. Five research questions were answered. The study adopted descriptive survey research design and was carried out in five Federal Universities in South East of Nigeria. The population was 34, 022 female students from the institutions under study; a sampling interval of 10% reduction technique was used. Questionnaire and oral interview guide were used for data collection. Out of the 3,402 copies of questionnaire administered, a total of 3025 were filled and returned. This represents 89% return rate. Mean was used for answering research questions. The findings of this study reveals that most selections of accessories, make-up and dresses are for the purposes of attending lectures, going to libraries and social functions like picnics and parties. But these purposes have been misplaced in the sense that nudity and Eurocentric craze overtook common sense of moderation in fashion. Art Education presents art as a resource for entrepreneurship for female students. It also strategically advertises the Department of Fine and Applied Arts of the five Universities as marketing points for durable, dependable and simple fashionable dresses. Values of self-dependence is a way female student learns to make simple dresses herself thereby developing an eye for aesthetic appreciation. Public enlightenment, textile and fashion Design Art Exhibitions, Fashion workshops and Seminars as well as Electronic Media adverts were identified as source of fashion design. The promotion of Negritude and indigenous art forms could be attained quicker and better by imploring the authorities to decree that female fashion in Universities should embrace Art – made wears and make-up. A day or two in a week could be termed indigenous dress week, to achieve this aim.
