MUSEUM S AND ART GALLERIES IN THE PROMOTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF ART EDUCATION IN ENUGU STATE, SOUTH EAST NIGERIA
ABSTRACT
Museums and art galleries give people opportunities to see and know about works of art made in our time and in the past. Museums are institutions which preserve, collect and display objects basically for seeing, entertaining and providing materials for research. Museums and galleries bring the past to life. They have strong representations of the different periods of our cultural history. Museums and art galleries have been a source of art promotion in Nigeria and they preserve the past and present for the future. For this reason, museums and art galleries in Enugu are investigated to know wether they contribute in the promotion of art in the development of art education in South East Nigeria. The study shows that the museums and art galleries in Enugu are not fulfilling their obligations to artists as a source of inspiration and patronage. The study also recorded that artists patronize the museums occasionally and there are a lot of problems facing museum s and art galleries in Enugu. The research work is organized under five chapters. Chapter one contains the Introduction, Background of the study, Statement of the problem, Purpose of the study, Research Questions, Chapter two dealt with the Literature Review, the Museum concept, Museum and Education, the Development of Museums and galleries in Nigeria Museums and galleries in Art promotion, Brief history of National Museum, Enugu, problems facing museums and galleries in Nigeria, items in the National Museum of Unity Enugu were discussed. A brief history of Bona Ezeudu and Summary of Literature Review were done while Chapter three focused on Research method, Design of the study, Area of the study, Method of Data collection, Data preparation, Target population. Chapter Four contains Data presentation and Analysis while Chapter five is the summary, conclusion and recommendation.
