THE ROLE OF VOICE OF NIGERIA IN THE RE- BRANDING NIGERIA- PROJECT

PREFACE

Nigeria’s ministry of information, under Professor Dora Akunyili, in early 2009, began a campaign to re-brand Nigeria and create a good image for the country.  The project became imperative because of the negative image Nigeria has been associated with over the years.

Re-branding Nigeria is a communication activity, which requires that the media must be employed to disseminate information about Nigeria, set the agenda for creating a good image, goodwill and understanding for Nigeria and Nigerians in the mind of the listener.

Voice of Nigeria, as Nigeria’s only external radio broadcasting service should have a role to play in the re-branding project.  This study examines the role Voice of Nigeria can play in the rebranding of Nigeria and how it has been playing that role.

The study is divided into five chapters.  Chapter 1 is the introduction, which gives a background to the issue being studied.

Chapter 2 is a review of existing literature on Nigeria and the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO), the theoretical framework for the study, which dwells on the agenda setting theory and the gate-keeping theory.

Chapter 3 is the Methodology, which explains the method of content analysis, the population of study, the sampling technique, the content categories and method of data analysis.

In Chapter 4, the data collated from the study is analysed and presented using tables and percentages.

Chapter 5 is the Summary, Recommendations and Conclusion.

ABSTRACT

In the globalized world in which live today, no nation can exist without interacting with other nations.  The concept of globalization has narrowed the hitherto distance between nations, bringing them together in the area of business, politics, sports, culture etc.  For each country to stand firmly and confidently in the comity of nations it must be seen as trustworthy, dignified, reputable, law-abiding and transparent.   However, the image which Nigeria cast on the mind of people in different parts of the world is negative.  This negative image has been created because of the activities of corrupt politicians, unscrupulous businessmen, the involvement of Nigerians in money laundering and advance fee fraud as well as the trafficking of Nigerian women to work as commercial sex workers in some European countries. The problem is not helped by the asymmetrical and unbalanced reportage of events in Nigeria by foreign media.  It is in response to this negative image about Nigeria that the Nigerian ministry of information embarked on the rebranding Nigeria project. In doing this, Voice of Nigeria has a role to play.  This study examines this role and how Voice Nigeria can be integrated into the rebranding project.
