LINGUISTIC CONSTRUCTION OF GENDER IN CHINUA ACHEBE’S THINGS FALL APART AND CHIMAMANDA ADICHIE’S HALF OF A YELLOW SUN

ABSTRACT

This thesis examines the linguistic construction of gender in Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun and shows how this reflects the social reality of the relationships between women and men in Nigeria. The linguistic construction in the two novels is important as it projects the relationships between persons and places. In our society, one gender could be seen as superior to the other and this causes some structural inequality in power and economic distribution. The female gender is usually depersonalized and socially constructed as secondary and subservient to the generic male gender. This study specifically examines Achebe’s and Adichie’s use of grammatical categories in the construction of male and female genders in Things Fall Apart and Half of a Yellow Sun. The study explores the points of difference and similarity in Achebe’s and Adichie’s construction of male and female genders in their novels. The study has demonstrated that Adichie used deliberate female linguistic choices which seek to upturn entrenched patriarchal hegemony which Achebe’s Things Fall Apart promoted. The study also reveals that chauvinistic and feministic traits of domination, oppression, marginalization and derogation of the male and female genders are evident in the language and diction of the authors in the two texts. The study showed that Achebe used language in Things Fall Apart to the advantage of the masculine gender while Adichie’s use of language in Half of a Yellow Sun subverted and challenged the status quo.
