Pragmatic Analysis of the Dramatic Dialogues in Ngugi Wa Thiongo & Micere Githae Mugo’s The Trial of Dedan Kimathi and Femi Osofisan’s Morountodun

ABSTRACT

viii

The work focused on the Pragmatic Analysis of Dramatic Dialogues in Ngugi Wa Thiongo and Micere Githae Mugo’s The Trial of Dedan Kimathi and Femi Osofisan’s Morountodum.  Dramatic dialogues usually reflect what happens in real life talk exchange.  This is because drama is events acted on stage.  An analysis of these texts is very essential because often in conversation, people contravene.  They go contrary to the expectation.  Some selected dialogues from these texts were used as samples and analyzed using H. P. Grice’s conversational theory of pragmatics encompassing the maxims of quantity, quality, relation and manner.  These maxims hold the speaker in any talk exchange not to say too much or too little, and to say the truth and nothing but the truth, to say that which relates to the context or the ongoing discussion and be orderly.  The objectives of the study were: to determine the application of these maxims to some selected dialogues in the two texts; to what extent these maxims were obeyed or contravened.  The instrument for data collection included selected dialogues from the two texts, Going by H.P. Grice’s principles in analyzing the data, the researcher discovered that most of the selected dialogues contravened the maxim of quantity, quality, manner and relation to a great extent and obeyed the maxims to a less extent.  It is interesting to note that conversations (dialogues) are better appreciated with the application of Grice’s theory of conversational analysis.  The proper application of these maxims makes way for a good appreciation of conversation.  The researcher recommended that the study of pragmatics as a branch of linguistics be emphasised in our universities.  She also recommended that the analysis of texts (existing data) be encouraged. The researcher made suggestions for further studies in the pragmatic analysis of dramatic dialogues and live drama on stage.
