THE IMPACT OF HEALTH EDUCATION TO MOTHERS ON THE CONTROL OF SOME INTESTINAL GEOHEMINTHS AMONG SCHOOL PUPILS IN IFE – NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF OSUN STATE, NIGERIA.

Abstract

This study evaluated the impact of health education given to mothers on control of intestinal geohelminths amongst their children attending two public primary schools in Akinlalu and Yakoyo villages in Ife North local government
area of Osun state Nigeria. The specific objectives were to determine the prevalence of intestinal geohelminths amongst primary school pupils, assess the knowledge of pupils on mode of transmission and prevention of intestinal geohelminths, assess the nutritional status of pupils using some anthropometric indices, provide health education for the mothers in the intervention school in addition to the health education provided for pupils in intervention and control schools and evaluate the impact of the intervention after six months.
This was an interventional study spanning over six months from December 2006 to June 2007.A total of 280 respondents were recruited for the study after obtaining written consents from their parents. However 266 respondents completed the study 14 respondents had left the two villages before completion of the study.
The prevalence of intestinal geohelminths was high amongst respondents in the two schools; roundworm had the highest prevalence amongst pupils in both schools 87.1% and 84.3% in the intervention and control school respectively. This was followed by whip worm and then hook worm. Cure rates of 94.9% and 95.0 % were achieved for hook worm in the intervention and control schools respectively following administration of one tablet 400mg of albendazole to the pupils. The cure rate was equally high for round worm but was low for whip worm when compared with others. The re-infection rate was highest for round worm compared with that of the other intestinal worms six months after .The re-infection rate of roundworm was lower in the intervention school compared
with the control school. The prevalence of intestinal geohelminths was similar and comparable amongst children of mothers who had no formal education and those who had at least primary six. (X2 0.00, P 0.999). The knowledge of mode of transmission of intestinal geohelminths was poor amongst respondents in both intervention and control schools at baseline, 50 (35.7%) respondents in the control school while 53 (37.6%) had good knowledge in the intervention school (X2 0.138, P 0.710). The knowledge of respondents improved significantly such that at post evaluation 123 (91%) in the control group and120 (92%) intervention had good knowledge. There was no statistical significant difference between knowledge of respondents in intervention and control schools after intervention. (X2 0.020, P 0.887.)
The number of under weight respondents was high amongst respondents in both the intervention and control school at baseline. This however reduced from the baseline number of 70 (50.0%) to 45 (33.3%) in the control school and 61 (43.6%) to 31 (23.7%) in the intervention school
The study concludes that providing health education to mothers did not confer any advantage to the pupils in control of intestinal geohelminths.
