EFFECT OF HEALTH EDUCATION OF MOTHERS ON HOME MANAGEMENT OF CHILDHOOD DIARRHOEAL DISEASES IN UMUAHIA, ABIA STATE
Abstract
This was an experimental study to assess the effect of health education of mothers on home management of childhood diarrhoeal diseases. Two hundred and twenty nine women aged from 20-59 years were selected from two rural communities in Umuahia, Abia State using a multistage sampling technique. An initial baseline data was collected from both groups through the administration of a pre-tested interviewer-administered questionnaire translated into Igbo language. Subsequently, health education was given only to those in the study group in three sessions for two weeks. After three months, the effect of the health education was assessed for both the study and control groups using the same interviewer-administered questionnaire.
The findings showed statistically significant improvement in the post-intervention survey between the study and the control groups who knew: that diarrhoea causes dehydration (P=0.004), signs of dehydration such as dry sunken eyes(P=0.001), excessive thirst (P=0.001). Statistically significant differences were found between the study and the control groups who increased fluid intake during diarrhoea (P=0.001) and those who gave extra meal following episode of diarrhoea (P=0.001). This is unlike what obtained at baseline were none of the variables considered were statistically significant.
