EFFECT OF HEALTH EDUCATION ON THE KNOWLEDGE AND SAFETY PRACTICES OF AUTO MECHANICS IN LAGOS STATE

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effect of a health education intervention on knowledge, attitude and practice of safety among auto mechanics in Lagos State. Four hundred auto technicians in mechanics villages in two local government areas in Lagos were interviewed with questionnaires and forty workshops assessed.
The age range of respondents was 18-68 years while the means were 33.3 years for the study group and 34.4 years for the control group. Majority (68%) had primary or no education and mechanics form the bulk of the technicians in the mechanic villages. Others were panel beaters/welders, spray painters and auto electricians.
High level of awareness of occupational hazards was found in both groups and a statistical significant increase found in the study group after intervention. There was no statistically significant association between the level of awareness of hazard, age, educational level and duration of years on the job. The overall was the most known personal protective device (93.6% before and 97.5% after intervention). Statistically significant changes were also found in personal hygiene practices including hand washing and possession of work clothes.
This study recommends that occupational health services should be included in the primary health care services in Nigeria and also that safety committee should be formed and medical advisers employed by respective unions to ensure continued health
