DESIGN AND IMPLIMENTATION COURSE REGISTRATION AND EXAMINATIONVALIDATION USING
FINGERPRINT TECHNOLOGY
ABSTRACT

This thesis project is about designing an integrated database system where the proposed system will provide reliable, verifiable, and convenient authentication system. As we know, biometric technologies are commonly used nowadays. Besides providing strong security, it also convenient to use. The fingerprint technology is cheaper and easy to implement compared to other biometrics technologies. This Course Registration and Examination Validation using Fingerprint Technology is designed to enhance the current Course Registration and Examination Validation at FTMSK. This enhancement is made to make this system more efficient and reliable. For the course registration system, the proposed system will overcome the problem that we have faced with the current system. From the testing that have been made, this proposed system have countered the problem that exist from the current system. The proposed system with the fingerprint feature can make examination validation is strongly secure because no student can except to be authenticate before they enter the examination room. Besides provide security, this new system provides efficiency to both parties; student and invigilator.

  1. INTRODUCTION

1.1                                                        BACKGROUND
The technology of computer today spread very rapidly. We can hear an existing of the new technology almost everyday. The advancement in the technology can also change our lifestyle. For example, the stand-alone server can be integrated to make job more easy and handy and also save time and cost. The simplest example of this technology is online banking.
The most popular security technology nowadays is biometric. Actually, biometric has been exist for a several decades. For example, HOME ALONE movie (in 80’s) where they use voice recognition technology to protect their property. In that movie, the parent uses their voice combination to enter the cave door. Biometric consists of many technologies such as fingerprint scanning, iris recognition, and barcode scanning. The biometric technology is more secure than password or PIN number because people nowadays are knowledgeable to crack the password and guessing PIN number. Although this technology provide reliable security system but Malaysian people still not applies this technology because of many factors such as an expensive cost to implement and maintain and also because of the provided system does not Mfill their requirement.

1.2                                                          PROBLEM STATEMENT
1.2.1 Course Registration
During registration, students queue for a long time to enter registration room because there are students those registers for other students and there are also students that come to register not at their compulsory day. There are also problem when only certain courses cannot be registered online because of the group is full or the course is offered by other faculties. After course registration form issued, students need to fill in add/drop course form if they found that there is unregistered course in their list. Administration then need to key in the data from the form into the system. After all data entered the system course registration list issued and students need to make course validation. Then, examination slip issued.
1.2.2               Final Exam Validation
While attending the exam, students need to bring their exam slip and student card If they had left one of these materials (or both), they need to get the verification from the administration. This will make them rushing because they need to go to the office and at the same time, they want to seat for the exam.

1.3                                          OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT
The objective is important to set the focus and aim the goal. When doing a project, the goal should be achieved under certain criteria for successful project. At the end of this project, there are several things 1 would like to accomplish. In order to accomplish the goal, three main objectives have been identified. The objectives are as followed:
1.3.1 To proposed new integrated database system
The first project objective is to develop new integrated database system. This new database system will be integrated with the use of fingerprint technology. This system must able to store the fingerprint image. This database system will be integrated with other faculties’ database that provide their course for FTMSK student. This system will provide the faculties an easy access to the data.
1.3.2 To compare the current system with the proposed system
The second project objective is to compare the current system with the proposed system. The similarity between the systems is both system is integrated but the differences are on how the database is used. The testing will be conducted to prove the efficiency of the new system compared to the current one.
1.3.3 To provide reliable, verifiable, and convenient authentication
The last objective is to provide security in term of data and examination validation. Data that have been entered and stored in the database cannot be modified easily. Only certain people who have right access (using fingerprint scanning) to the system can change the data. For examination validation, the use of fingerprint will make only the verify student can take the exam. These shows that thus project provide reliable, verifiable and convenient authentication system.

1.4                                                                  SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
1.4.1 System
This project focuses on Course Registration System and Examination Validation System.
1.4.2 Technology
We will be using fingerprint technology with the Digital Persona fingerprint scanner model are U 2000 USB fingerprint Reader.
1.4.3 Environment
This project will be tested at Faculty of Information Technology and Quantitative Science.

1.5                                               SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT
As we all know, the course registration system has caused a problem for the students and administration. To avoid this problem, course registration system needed the new system that can eliminate the problems as far as possible. The new system will be call as Course Registration and Final Exam Validation using Fingerprint Technology. I have identified four significances for my project. There are:
1.5.1 More systematic system
The first benefit of this project is it will make course registration become more systematic where the registration is only based on online and no more manual process.
1.5.2 Paperless
Many forms will be eliminated. The used of form will be replaced by online form that will be retrieve from online system. The use of online system will make the task will be done computerized.
1.5.3 More secure and reliable examination process
The final exam process will be more secure. It is because this system will use fingerprint scanning to detect validated student.
1.5.4 Avoid human error
The last benefit is this system will avoid almost all human errors. This will be done because the data is needed to enter to the system once and any changes can be monitored easily. All process after the data had been key in is done computerized.

1.6                                               PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project overview will briefly explained about what is discussed in each chapter. This project paper consists of six chapters; there are introduction, literature review, research approach and methodology, system design and development, result and finding, and conclusion and recommendation.
