CHAPTER ONE

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

  • BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Sexuality and contraceptives is an increasing topic in this 21st century around the world due to the adverse effects of unsafe sexual behaviors, such as unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases among the adolescents as well as adults. Teaching adolescents about birth control may not be consistent with promoting abstinence. However, most adolescents are sexually active and have high tendency to engage in early sexual activities despite having knowledge of abstinence.

The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines adolescents as individuals in the 10-19years age group. Adolescence is the transitional period from childhood to adulthood and it is a period of life with specific health and developmental needs and rights. It is also a time to develop knowledge and skills, learn to manage emotions and relationships and acquire attributes and abilities that will be important for enjoying years and assuming adult roles (WHO, 2014).  Adolescence is the period of physical, psychological and emotional development triggered by a cascade of endocrine changes that lead to sexual maturation and reproductive maturity (WHO, 2018).

There are nearly 1.2 billion adolescents (10-19 years old) worldwide and in some countries, adolescents make up as much as a quarter of the population and the number of adolescents is expected to rise through 2050, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where close to 90% of 10- to 19-year-olds live (WHO, 2019). According to the WHO (2017) report, in many countries especially Latin America and Africa, sexual activity begins in early adolescence, before 15 years old for girls and boys tend to start earlier. Early initiation of sexual activities associated with negative outcomes such as risky sexual behaviors that heighten the likelihood of unintended pregnancies or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) including HIV (WHO, 2017).

Even though adolescents start sexual activities at the tender age, contraception prevalence among them is very low as revealed by Guttmacher Institute and International Planned Parenthood (2015), the World Health Organization (WHO, 2017) revealed there is limited data on world contraception usage for unmarried adolescents because of cultural and religious beliefs. However, as low as 10 percent is the available data for sexually active girls age 15-19 that use modern contraception as a result, there is a lot of unmet needs and this result to more than 6 million unintended pregnancies annually in developing countries and often end in unsafe abortion.

In Nigeria, unlike in some developed and developing countries where Several Married adolescent women are especially unable to negotiate sex or condom use with their husbands who may have extramarital partners, such that most young adolescent women are several times more inclined than young adolescent men to contract the HIV/AIDS disease through heterosexual link.

As a result this study intends to examine adolescents’ perception of sexuality and contraceptive utilization among youths in Lugbe Abuja.  It is hope that the findings in this study will provide basis for development of reproductive health of the young females in to the country.
