DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF MOBILE AND WEB APPLICATION FOR [SUMSUM SALADS &GRILLS]

ABSTRACT

In today’s COVID hit world all business small or large has taken a hit either positively or negatively. Furthermore, the lockdown imposed due to coronavirus also caused people to switch to online buying of groceries and essentials. Due to the willingness, acceptance, and changes in the pattern of people to online delivery related to food ordering in restaurants, this study will focus on the design and implementation of a mobile application for SUMSUM SALADS & GRILLS, which is a fresh and healthy eating business in Abuja, Nigeria.  SUMSUM is an online business with no physical location. Therefore, the only form of placing an order was through Instagram or phone calls which is not very professional. A customer may get a delay from being attended to by SUMSUM administrator. Implementation of this application will make it easy for both the customer and SUMSUM management. For customers, once the appl is installed on their mobile phones, iPads or tablets, they will be able to have access to all the menu and have the chance to make their own salad or grill by selecting the items they would want. The customer would also be able to get their receipts immediately after purchase and any orders placed before 12pm WAT will be delivered that same day and orders after that will be delivered the next day (customers could also order days or weeks ahead of time). Customers in and out of Nigeria will have access to both the mobile app and web app as most other business do not provide that opportunity because someone out of the country may want to order for someone in the country. A gift-wrapping option and a note will be provided at the end of checkout if you want to send as a gift to someone and sometimes even for your own use. SUMSUM SALADS & GRILLS is popularly known for its presentation and Its signature salad dressing that is homemade and low-fat which will also be available on the app, customers could also have a pick of which dressing they would want for their order and for the grills they would also get to pick the specific fish they want and which vegetables they would want for the garnish. A pickup option will be available where customer can see the pickup address and contact on the receipt and for the delivery, they would be provided with where they enter delivery contact and address. FUNFACT is customer will be able to track their delivery rider when the order has been dispatched. In this study secondary data has been used from past researches conducted by various researchers and different papers from various authors have been reviewed to make this paper successful. The study includes almost every factor to study the impact of coronavirus on acceptance of food home-delivered.

CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION

             1.1       OVERVIEW

Online food delivery is a service in which a store or restaurant delivers food to a customer through the restaurant’s website or mobile application. Due to internet and allied technologies, customers can easily avail all the information that are required to select, evaluate and purchase the product. The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc on most facets of life, including people's ability to access products. Consumers have been held at home due to governmentimposed lockdowns, preventing regular shopping habits, and many brick-and-mortar businesses have closed. Pharmacies and grocery stores, for example, have stayed open but with altered hours. Many restaurants have closed or resorted to takeout in order to stay afloat. For many customers, home delivery has provided a solution to some of COVID-19's challenges.  Ecommerce and home delivery may be a convenient option for staff who are expected to work remotely, as well as a number of other categories, such as parents who must manage work and parental duties, or those who are at risk of severe COVID-19 health complications. When the pandemic of coronavirus hit the world the food industry and related services were heavily impacted. This outbreak led the Nigerian government to make the food delivery and restaurants business to be categorized as critical services. Since more than 20% of population in Nigeria relies on online food and restaurants services on daily basis which include students, working young people, and paying visitors these services needed to be started again. This pandemic has in more than one way created challenges for online food delivery and food industry in large that could have lasting effects.  dr Food industry, such as online food delivery services, are eager to provide food. Customers, on the other hand, are wary of placing orders during the pandemic, despite the fact that many online food delivery services have allowed the delivery personnel to equip themselves with protective gear and encouraged customers to pay digitally to ensure contactless delivery. The cleanliness conditions of the restaurants and the sanitary conditions of the food deliver personnel are some of the major reasons behind people not trusting the online delivery of food and services of online food delivery platforms. Current consumers have been forced to rethink their potential buying decisions as a result of these problems.

Despite the problems encountered by people in ordering food through online mode because of the pandemic, problems like shortage of food inventories, unavailability of public transport system, less hours to work at convenience stores and supermarkets, a great percentage of people have been able to get access to sufficient amounts of food stocks. All this can be related largely to the fact that there is a rapid increase in number of online food apps which encourage people to order their meals online and to have it sent to their homes or pickup by themselves without entering the restaurant itself. Programs which encourage shopping for groceries and ordering food online can also help in minimizing the spread of Covid-19 virus by decreasing the interaction between customers and sellers creating a safe environment in itself. Therefore, considering all the facts that customers are shifting to order food online and shopping for groceries online, this study is focused at designing online (web and mobile application) to enable customers and place order for their salads and grills.

Sumsum is an online business with no physical location and the only form of placing order was through Instagram or phone calls which is not very professional. What this study proposes is an online salads and grills ordering system for SUMSUM SALADS & GRILLS, which is a fresh and healthy eating business in Abuja. The main advantage of this system is that it greatly simplifies the ordering process for both the customer and the business. The system also greatly lightens the load on the business end, as the entire process of taking orders is automated. Once an order is placed on the mobile application that will be designed, it is placed into the database and then retrieved, in pretty much real-time, by a web application application on the business end. Within this application, all items in the order are displayed, along with their corresponding options and delivery details, in a concise and easy to read manner. This allows the business employees to quickly go through the orders as they are placed and produce the necessary items with minimal delay and confusion. The greatest advantage of this system is its FLEXIBILITY. No stress of sending menus, replying to direct messages, or having to deal with many other disadvantages such as “please no tomatoes in my salad, or please no broccoli in my fish garnish” all that will now be sorted as you will get to select what you want.

1.2 BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION

Due to the recent pandemic, majority of businesses got affected According to (Bhati Anam, et al., 2020) research has shown that 52% of consumers avoid going to crowded areas to make purchases and 36% would only participate in physical shopping only if they get vaccinated. With this latest trend, Sumsum is propelled to setup a mobile application for online ordering rather than opening a restaurant. The society appreciates convenience and avoiding crowded environment, (Skeldon, 2020) stated that retail sales on mobile applications were up 30% compared to the first quarter of 2020 and 25% stronger than the last quarter of 2019 pre-Covid. If a customer should step into a restaurant and see nothing less than 10 people then that customer would rather go somewhere else to get what they want which will drastically make the restaurant lose money. A huge motivation is how much we get contacted about having deliveries, out of 90% of customers, not even up to 10% have asked if we have a walk-in restaurant. Majority just prefer to request for delivery which shows by implementation of this application, our customers will be happy and that may get us even more customers because of the creativity, convenience, and uniqueness.

In the current society majority of our people have health conditions which makes them really selective with what they eat, people tend to be picky and selective which we do not really offer because our menu is standard but with the proposed application, customers will be able to select what they want from the menu addons. This is a huge motivation as the proposed model will attract new customer and keep existing customers. Although the pandemic has produced a significant business opportunity, delivery delays are one of the issues that has been faced during this period and it has created demand uncertainty (Denger, 2020). This is a huge motivation to make our delivery services fast and efficient allowing our customers keep track of their order through the mobile or web application with notifications and alerts to keep them informed of their delivery. Another motivation is being able to order for your loved ones in Abuja from any region you are which makes it unique.

With all these decisions mentioned above, I feel it is a strong background and bundles of motivation to really implement my web and mobile application.

1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Since March, 2020, the Nigerian government decreed mobility restrictions within the country, closed borders to all foreign travellers due to the spread of the coronavirus, and suspended faceto-face work in the government and private sectors; however, prioritized sectors (e.g., utilities, security, health) and delivery services were allowed to operate with specific guideline. Due to the lockdown, the entertainment, hospitality and restaurant sectors are the most affected. Most restaurant and cafe owners projected a fall in sales of 30% or more during 2020. During this crisis, delivery providers emerged as an alternative to mitigate the drop in sales. So therefore, digital tools are a great option to receive orders, distribute orders and produce after sale service through online system. For this system, there will be a system administrator who will have the rights to enter the menu with current prevailing prices, a mobile application to enable customers place and receive orders, online payments and quick delivery of the products ordered would be implemented.

1.4 AIM AND OBJECTIVES

This study lays out a framework for a new system to be developed and deployed for Sumsum for maximum use and to create an avenue through the web and mobile where customers can log on to our server and make a selection of salads and grills they like and subsequently pay via the internet.

The project aims to build a web-based and mobile-based system for restaurant, which automates food ordering system. It will also help the management to manage the online orders and view the status. The management can add menus and take orders with the system. The system also has a simple mobile-friendly user interface which can be used through different types of devices and screens. In order to achieve the mentioned aim, following objectives should be achieved:

  • An extensive literature review will be conducted to find out the past work done to automate the food ordering process of restaurant.
  • Appropriate methods and methodologies will be used for designing and developing the whole system in systematic approach.
  • Laravel will be used for developing the backend and flutter will be used for developing frontend of the system.
  • The home page of this web interfile provides an avenue where customers will be able to gather more and reliable information about what Sumsum really do.
  • This will provide a user friendly environment between the customer and employee thus increasing the efficiency, accuracy and reliability of the food ordering system.
  • The products and services offered would provide the customers with all the different categories of available salads and grills with their respective toppings that they can choose and select from.
  • To develop a reliable, convenient, and accurate ordering system.
  • To improve communication between client and the server and minimize the time of order.
  • To automatically compute bill.
  • It will also help for easy retrieval of orders made by the customers.
  • The system will be tested properly to ensure the quality of the system.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF PROJECT

The online grocery shopping market is at a pivotal point in its evolution. Prior to the COVID19 pandemic, it was predicted that online food business would challenge the footfall of onsite food restaurants and markets, However the sales made through deliveries and orders made online in all totality were less 5% of overall sales. Nonetheless, as websites grew more user-friendly, online purchasing increased at a steady pace, making it impossible to distinguish the spike in shopping attributed to COVID19 from longer-term patterns. By reviewing the cases and people’s response to ordering food online this research points the general thinking of public to acceptance of food delivered online through online food delivery systems. Therefore, it is important to look into the development of online ordering system for firms to meet up with demands of the customers. The food ordering and delivery system will help customers and management to:

  • Reduce the workload in the present system
  • Reduce time wasted in data processing
  • The system will help to reduce labour cost involved
  • Create a platform for online purchase and delivery of fast food
  • Keep accurate record on purchased order and delivery
  • The system will avoid long queues at the counter due to the speed of execution and number of optimum screens to accommodate the maximum throughput
  • The system will be less probable to make mistake, since it’s a machine.

1.6 LIMITATION

Due to time and financial constraints, the software that is developed covers only the aspect of food ordering, payments and delivery.

1.7 SCOPE/PROJECT ORGANIZATION

The scope of this system is to develop an electronic-based ordering for SUMSUM SALADS

& GRILLS since they are still using a manual system in their transactions, payments and even in generating reports. The system will consist of some significant modules in order to satisfy the company’s needs as well as the customers’.

Restaurants can offer electronic ordering both through their own online web or mobile site and through sites that serve various restaurants, and all restaurants also accept orders via text message more over the credit point and discount coupen out that many restaurants increased sales level as a result of accepting electronic orders. The restaurant now day a interactive and up-to-date menu with all available options in an easy to use manner.  Most of Younger consumers were more likely to have used online food ordering is essentially adoption on selfservice approaches.  Well-designed self-service ordering systems give customers actual control over the pace of their transaction and allow them to limit the amount of personal interaction of restaurant. In most cases, an increased level of control has been shown to lead to higher level of customer satisfaction and greater intent to use or recommend suggested the service. Perceived convenience of a self-service system also leads to an increase in adoption and satisfaction. In this instance, the definition of convenience is related primarily to access convenience and transaction convenience. A customer will search for a favourite restaurant base on customer location, choose from available items. Payment can be amongst others either by credit card or cash
