DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF SECURED SYSTEM FOR FUELING STATION SERVICES

ABSTRACT

 

This project report describes a mobile android based application which aids users in paying for the services rendered at fuelling stations. This application consists of features that makes the payment process quick, easy and seamless. The application comes with features like google maps to help users find nearby fuel stations. This dissertation also consists of the activity diagrams, application architecture, uses cases and entity relationship diagrams. The technologies used in the execution of the objectives of this research are android studio as the IDE of choice and Firebase for the database. Upon convincing assessment and system verification, the writer sees that the application can be used modestly and efficiently.

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

 

1.1     Overview

This project aims at enabling users pay for services rendered at fueling stations using their smartphones. The use of smartphones has become rampant lately. Also, from time to time, issues arise between the fuel attendants and their customers when it comes to the payment for purchased fuel. Most times, these issues arise when banks are having server issues and/or poor network. Also, people tend to forget their wallets, ATM cards, or money at home because of the need to hurriedly meet with a scheduled engagement but they hardly ever forget their phones. Thus, creating an application which enables users to solve fueling station transactions directly from their phones without passing through the bank is important.

 

This application makes fueling station transactions easier by allowing users to transfer and store money on the application at any time. The users can use the money they stored on the application to pay for any service rendered at the fueling station by input of the fueling stations ID, the amount they want to pay, and then confirm the transaction. When this is done, the amount paid would be deducted from their available balance and that same amount would be paid into the account the fueling station registered their id with. The application would also allow users to schedule payments in order to reduce queues at fueling stations, this means that users can pay ahead of time and when they get to the fueling station, they would show a digital receipt of the transaction to the fueling station attendants which would enable them confirm the payment.  Even though our stations are not self-service, the use of mobile phones as an extra method of payment would help make transactions easier and more flexible for customers at fueling stations.

 

1.2     Background and Motivation

Before the introduction of the cashless policy by the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2011, the Nigerian economy was highly cash-oriented in its transaction of goods and services contrary to global trends. A cashless economy is categorized by an economic situation whereby dealings are carried out without the need for physical cash; and this is done with the use of credit card or debit card payments (Taiwo et al, 2016). The cashless economy does not mean a complete absence of cash transactions, rather it refers to cash transactions being kept at the barest minimum. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria, the cashless policy was introduced, in line with the nation’s vision 2020 goal of being one of the top 20 economies of the world, to drive the development and modernization of the Nigerian payment system.[1] [2]

 

However, the use of cash, according to Nwaolisa and Kasie (2014), in carrying out transactions has remained relatively high in Nigeria. This is due to poor network connections in the use of Point-Of-Sale and bank transfers which often results in debiting customers’ accounts more than once, high transaction charges by banks, as well as security and technical setbacks, for example. These are some of the factors still posing challenges in crossing into a cashless society.[3]

 

Poor network connection when using Point-Of-Sale, banks debiting customers account more than once and security and technical setbacks are issues which affect the cashless society but there are also issues with the cash-oriented society. Some of these issues are people can be victims of robberies, and in case of a disaster like fire outbreak, the money would be destroyed.

 

The issues highlighted above are associated with fueling stations because they implement both cash-oriented and cashless policy.

 

With the increasing usage of smartphones in today’s society, banks have created mobile applications for smartphones to try to take advantage of the cashless policy. This motivates this project to create an application which would aid customers to pay for services rendered at fueling stations. Though the application would not pass directly through banks because of their occasional network issues, it would make transactions safe and fast for the customers and would also comply with the nation’s 2020 goal. This project would also help tackle a majority of the issues highlighted in this chapter in other to make staff of a fueling station and also their customers to feel safe during transactions.

 

1.3     Statement of the Problem

With the increase in the number of vehicles in Nigeria, there has also been a corresponding increase in the number of fueling stations. Although these stations have been increasing, some issues are still persistent with them. A look at how transactions take place at a fueling station shows that there are a lot of inadequacies in the payment method. Some of the issues encountered when paying for fuel are:

  • Poor network services: it is becoming more rampant for banks to have network issues that affect customers when paying for services. This issue sometimes affects the fueling station, as transactions are reversed sometimes due to poor network. The stations may suffer a loss at the end.
  • Card errors: Sometimes we get messages like card not smart. This isn’t necessarily a network issue, rather it’s a temporary issue with the card. This happens when the POS cannot read the EMV chip in the ATM card.

 

1.4     Aims and Objectives

The proposed system is a payment tool which allows the user pay for services rendered at a fuelling station directly from their smart phones. The main priority of this system is to:

  • Direct users to the closest fuelling station to them
  • Ease the means of payment for users

The main aim of this project is to create a secure seamless way of paying for fuel which covers the shortcomings of the previous payment methods.

1.5     Significance of Project

This project is significant for the following reasons:

  • It reduces time spent at fuel pumps.
  • It reduces queues at fuelling stations.
  • During this covid 19 period, it reduces exposure to bacteria through the handling of ATM cards and naira notes.
  • It reduces security risks for the individual.
  • Without the use of cash, it reduces the risk of internal and external robberies for the station

1.7     Scope/Project Organization

This project is organized into five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the project and talks about its aims, significance, risk assessment introduces the readers to the general idea about the project. Chapter 2 presents the literature review and historical overview of the project. Chapter 3 shows the requirements, analysis and design of the project and it also shows the methodology used. Chapter 4 presents the implementation and testing of the application. Chapter 5 is the conclusion of the project. The Gantt chart and work plan depicting the project schedule can be found in the appendices section.
