KNOWLEDGE; ATTITUDE AND PRACTICES CONCERNING ADOLESCENT REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH. A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OREDO LGA, BENIN CITY EDO STATE

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to compare the knowledge, attitude and practices of adolescent reproductive health between students in public and private co-educational secondary schools in Oredo LGA of Benin City.
METHODOLOGY: This study was carried out in Oredo LGA of Benin City using a descriptive cross-sectional design. Respondents were selected by multistage sampling in which three schools were selected each from the private and public schools. A total of 228 respondents in public schools and 249 respondents in private schools were studied. Quantitative method of data collection was used.
RESULTS: The result showed that the general awareness of the students on topical reproductive health issues was good but the detail understanding of such issue was poor. About a fifth of the students (21.1% in the public schools and 24.1% in the private schools) knew what adolescent meant. More than half of the students could mention at least a change occurring in adolescent (57.5% in the public schools and 54.2% in the private schools) and there was a statistically significant difference between the two schools in terms of their knowledge of adolescence (p<0.05). Their knowledge of contraception was low as less than a fifth (18.0% in public and 6.0% in the private schools) knew what contraception meant. The most known method of contraception mentioned by respondents was condom (69.9% in public schools and 40% in private schools). The most common type of sexually transmitted infection mentioned was HIV/AIDS (61.6% in public schools and 81.9% in the private schools). The most common source of awareness on reproductive health issues was teachers/schools (65% in the public schools) and

television (47.9% in the private schools). The attitude of students to reproductive health matters was good in both public and private schools as more than 60% of the respondents felt neither boys nor girls should have sex before marriage. The history of sexual experience was more in the public schools (21.1%) than private schools (17.7%), and this difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). More of the respondents in the public schools than those in the private schools had experienced symptoms of sexually transmitted infections (P<0.05).
CONCLUSION: The awareness on topical reproductive health issues was high but their in-depth knowledge was poor. The knowledge of respondents in the public school was slightly better than those in private schools on contraceptives and STI. The attitude of respondents in public and private schools on pre-marital sex for boys and girls was good as most of them had the right attitude to this. The practices concerning reproductive health were poor in public schools than private schools.
RECOMMENDATION: It was therefore recommended that family life education should be taught to all pupils and students in all classes; and the teaching should be consistent and done repeatedly for satisfactory reinforcement.
