THE PLACE OF LITERATURE IN NIGERIAN POLYTECHNICS: A CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC, KAURA NAMODA
Abstract:
This research work examined the study of literature in Nigerian Polytechnics, with the view to ascertaining its status and functions. The thesis looked at why literature is studied in the Polytechnic system. It also considered the ideological framework for the teaching of literature in the Polytechnic system. For this reason, the thesis studied the orientation of the literature teachers and their students, and the teaching method. Also under study was the literature syllabus for the Courses in the Polytechnic system; preparatory National Diploma, National Diploma and Higher National Diploma. This research becomes relevant in respect of the fact that the Polytechnic system in Nigerians falls under the aspect of education called technical education. This is because technical education deals with the development and acquisition of scientific knowledge, while literature is a purely Arts subject. Thus, its inclusion in the Polytechnic curriculum has been greeted with misgivings. This thesis tried to situate the place of literature in technical education. The Federal Polytechnic Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State is the case study for this research. The thesis evaluated the polytechnic literature syllabus and showed that it is not adequate for the rationale of technical education in Nigeria. It was also revealed that the mode of integrating literature into the polytechnic system has limited the study of literature to mere introduction. Therefore, this research work emphasised that literature is not only relevant to technical education, but that literature can be made contributory to the attainment of a viable technological growth in Nigeria.
