DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF AN AUTOMATED PLANNING AND PLAYER MODELLING FOR INTERACTIVE STORYTELLING

ABSTRACT

Interactive storytelling (IS) takes into account the desire of audiences to take part in the development of a story's plot. Given the complexity of IS, interactive video game storylines can be enhanced and improved using Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques. Many experience management systems have been developed in the last ten years, but only a small number have been assessed. In addition, none of the evaluated systems provided both player modeling and a story generation module. In this paper, I introduce PAST (Player-specific Automated Storytelling), a novel experience management system that combines player modeling with generative experience management, two complementing strategies for enhancing player agency. I give a collection of empirical evaluations involving 320 people that demonstrate the effectiveness of my system has a positive effect on perceived player agency.
