ABSTRACT

This study examines the integration of multicultural education practices within inclusive classrooms in the Nigerian educational context. As Nigeria boasts a rich tapestry of ethnicities, languages, and cultures, it is imperative to explore how inclusive education strategies can be tailored to meet the diverse needs of learners. This research employs a mixed-methods approach, encompassing surveys, classroom observations, and interviews with educators, students, and parents across various regions in Nigeria. The study investigates the extent to which multicultural education principles are implemented in inclusive classrooms. Surveys assess educators’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to multicultural education, while classroom observations provide insights into the pedagogical strategies employed to cater to diverse learners. Interviews with stakeholders yield a comprehensive understanding of their perspectives, experiences, and challenges in fostering an inclusive and culturally sensitive learning environment. Preliminary findings reveal a range of approaches to multicultural education within inclusive classrooms, with variations influenced by factors such as geographical location, cultural composition, and available resources. Educators demonstrate a growing awareness of the importance of culturally relevant pedagogy but face challenges in adapting curriculum and materials to suit diverse learning styles and linguistic backgrounds. The study advocates for targeted professional development programs to enhance educators’ proficiency in multicultural education practices. It also emphasizes the significance of collaborative efforts between schools, communities, and policymakers to provide the necessary resources and support systems. Furthermore, the research underscores the importance of involving parents and families in the educational process, recognizing their pivotal role in reinforcing cultural identity and supporting their children’s learning journey. In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the implementation of multicultural education in inclusive classrooms in Nigeria.
