ABSTRACT

This study presents a comprehensive molecular characterization of pathogenic Escherichia coli strains isolated from ready-to-eat game meat and fresh produce in the southwestern region of Nigeria. Utilizing advanced genomic techniques, including polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing, we examined the genetic diversity, virulence factors, and antimicrobial resistance profiles of E. coli isolates. Our findings reveal a diverse array of pathogenic strains, including those harboring virulence genes associated with human infections. Moreover, antimicrobial resistance genes were detected, highlighting potential public health concerns. The results of this study provide critical insights into the prevalence and genetic characteristics of pathogenic E. coli in food samples, emphasizing the need for robust food safety measures and heightened surveillance in the region. This research contributes to our understanding of foodborne pathogens and supports the development of strategies to safeguard public health in Nigeria
