INVESTIGATING THE EFFECTS OF HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING ON MUSCULAR ENDURANCE IN NIGERIAN RUNNERS.

Abstract:
Muscular endurance is a crucial component of athletic performance, particularly in endurance sports such as running. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) has gained significant attention as an effective training method to enhance various aspects of athletic performance. However, limited research exists on the effects of HIIT specifically on muscular endurance in Nigerian runners. This study aims to investigate the effects of a structured HIIT program on muscular endurance in Nigerian runners.

The study will employ a pre-post intervention design, with a sample of Nigerian runners aged between 18 and 35 years. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an experimental group that undergoes a 12-week HIIT program or a control group that maintains their regular training routine. The HIIT program will consist of repeated bouts of high-intensity exercise alternated with short recovery periods.

Muscular endurance will be assessed using standardized tests, such as the sit-up test, push-up test, and plank hold test, before and after the intervention period. Additionally, physiological parameters, including heart rate, oxygen consumption, and lactate levels, will be measured during selected training sessions to provide insights into the physiological adaptations associated with HIIT.

It is hypothesized that the experimental group will exhibit significant improvements in muscular endurance compared to the control group. It is further anticipated that improvements in muscular endurance will be accompanied by physiological adaptations, such as increased aerobic capacity and improved anaerobic performance.

The findings of this study will contribute to the limited body of knowledge regarding the effects of HIIT on muscular endurance specifically in Nigerian runners. The results may inform coaches, trainers, and athletes in developing evidence-based training programs to optimize muscular endurance and overall athletic performance. Furthermore, this research may have implications for Nigerian runners aiming to enhance their endurance capabilities and achieve competitive success at national and international levels.
