PERFORMANCE OF A NIGERIAN METAKAOLIN-BASED GEOPOLYMER AS A SUSTAINABLE BUILDING MATERIAL

Abstract:
The construction industry is moving towards sustainable practices to mitigate environmental impacts and promote resource efficiency. Geopolymers, a class of cementitious materials, have gained attention as a potential alternative to conventional Portland cement-based materials due to their lower carbon footprint and improved durability. This study investigates the performance of a Nigerian metakaolin-based geopolymer as a sustainable building material.

The research begins with the characterization of Nigerian metakaolin, which is a pozzolanic material obtained from the calcination of kaolin clay. The physical, chemical, and mineralogical properties of metakaolin are evaluated to determine its suitability for geopolymer synthesis. The metakaolin is then activated using an alkaline activator solution composed of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate.

The mechanical properties of the geopolymer, including compressive strength, flexural strength, and split tensile strength, are assessed through a series of laboratory tests. The results are compared with those of conventional Portland cement-based concrete to evaluate the performance of the metakaolin-based geopolymer.

Furthermore, the durability characteristics of the geopolymer are examined, including resistance to chemical attack, water absorption, and carbonation. Special emphasis is placed on the evaluation of its long-term durability and structural performance under various environmental conditions.

The environmental impact of the metakaolin-based geopolymer is also evaluated through a life cycle assessment, considering factors such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, and resource depletion. The results are compared with those of conventional cement-based materials to assess the sustainability benefits of the geopolymer.

Overall, this study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the performance of a Nigerian metakaolin-based geopolymer as a sustainable building material. The findings will contribute to the existing knowledge on geopolymer technology and support the adoption of environmentally friendly construction practices in Nigeria and other regions with similar geological resources.
