SWEET CORROSION INHIBITION OF CARBON STEEL USING A BLEND OF PALM-JATROPHA LEAF EXTRACT IN 3.5% NACL SOLUTION

Abstract:
Corrosion of carbon steel in saline environments poses significant challenges in various industries, including oil and gas, marine, and infrastructure. This study investigates the potential of a blend of palm-jatropha leaf extract as a natural corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in a 3.5% NaCl solution, simulating a typical saline environment.

The palm-jatropha leaf extract was prepared by extracting the active compounds using a suitable solvent. The extract was characterized using spectroscopic techniques to identify the major constituents responsible for corrosion inhibition. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of carbon steel was evaluated using techniques such as potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).

The results demonstrated that the blend of palm-jatropha leaf extract exhibited remarkable corrosion inhibition efficiency for carbon steel in the 3.5% NaCl solution. The extract effectively reduced the corrosion rate and mitigated the destructive effects of chloride ions on the metal surface. The inhibition mechanism was attributed to the presence of bioactive compounds present in the extract, which formed a protective film on the steel surface, hindering the corrosion process.

The effectiveness of the corrosion inhibition was investigated by varying the concentration of the palm-jatropha leaf extract and the exposure time. The optimum concentration and exposure time were determined to achieve the maximum inhibition efficiency. Additional experiments were conducted to evaluate the stability and durability of the inhibitor under prolonged exposure to the corrosive environment.

This study provides valuable insights into the potential use of palm-jatropha leaf extract as a green and sustainable corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel in saline environments. The utilization of natural extracts offers a promising alternative to conventional synthetic inhibitors, reducing environmental impacts and promoting sustainable practices. Further research is warranted to explore the extract’s long-term performance, compatibility with other materials, and feasibility for large-scale applications.
