AN EXAMINATION OF ANIMAL-ASSISTED THERAPY FOR SUBSTANCE USE DISORDERS IN NIGERIA

Abstract:
Animal-Assisted Therapy (AAT) is an emerging therapeutic approach that harnesses the human-animal bond to improve physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. This abstract presents an overview of a study that aims to examine the efficacy of Animal-Assisted Therapy in treating Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) in Nigeria.

Substance Use Disorders pose a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, with increasing rates of addiction and limited treatment options. Traditional therapeutic modalities have shown some success, but there is a growing interest in exploring alternative and complementary approaches like AAT. However, there is a limited understanding of the implementation and effectiveness of AAT specifically for SUDs in the Nigerian context.

This study will employ a mixed-methods research design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. A sample of individuals with SUDs, who are engaged in a substance abuse treatment program, will be recruited for the study. Participants will be randomly assigned to either an experimental group receiving AAT or a control group receiving conventional therapy.

Quantitative data will be collected using standardized measures to assess variables such as substance use severity, emotional well-being, quality of life, and treatment outcomes. Qualitative data will be obtained through interviews and focus group discussions to explore participants’ experiences, perceptions, and the impact of AAT on their recovery journey.

The study aims to evaluate the effects of AAT on reducing substance use, improving emotional well-being, enhancing quality of life, and increasing treatment engagement and retention among individuals with SUDs in Nigeria. The findings will contribute to the existing literature on AAT and provide insights into its potential as an adjunctive therapy for SUDs in a Nigerian cultural context.

The results of this study will have implications for the development and integration of AAT interventions as part of comprehensive substance abuse treatment programs in Nigeria. Furthermore, it may inform policy decisions and encourage the inclusion of AAT in the national healthcare system to address the growing challenges of SUDs and improve treatment outcomes.
