Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of the research on the bottleneck to the effective use of academic libraries among students with visual impairments in tertiary institutions in Oyo State. The study aims to identify the challenges faced by visually impaired students when utilizing academic libraries and propose recommendations to overcome these obstacles.

The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing interviews, observations, and document analysis as data collection methods. A total of 50 visually impaired students from different tertiary institutions in Oyo State were selected through purposive sampling. Data analysis involved thematic analysis to identify common themes and patterns.

Findings reveal several bottlenecks that impede the effective use of academic libraries by visually impaired students. Firstly, physical barriers such as inadequate accessibility features, lack of tactile resources, and inappropriate furniture hinder their independent navigation and access to library resources. Secondly, technological challenges, including limited availability of assistive technologies and inaccessible digital resources, present significant obstacles for visually impaired students. Thirdly, inadequate training and awareness among library staff about serving visually impaired students contribute to the bottleneck.

To address these challenges, the study recommends the following interventions: (1) improving physical accessibility by implementing appropriate infrastructure modifications, installing tactile signage, and providing accessible furniture and equipment; (2) enhancing technological support by offering assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnifiers, and braille displays, as well as ensuring the accessibility of digital resources; (3) conducting regular training programs for library staff to enhance their knowledge and skills in serving visually impaired students; and (4) promoting awareness and inclusivity through sensitization campaigns and collaborative efforts between libraries and disability support services.

The research contributes to the existing literature on inclusive education by shedding light on the specific challenges faced by visually impaired students when using academic libraries. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, educational institutions, and library administrators to develop strategies that promote equitable access to information and knowledge for visually impaired students.
