Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the relationship between University Matriculation Examinations (UME) scores and the academic performance of first-year students in public universities in Edo State, with a specific focus on the role of sex as a potential differentiating factor. The study acknowledges the importance of UME scores as a criterion for university admission in Nigeria and explores whether these scores can serve as predictors of academic success among first-year students.

The research will adopt a quantitative correlational design, utilizing archival data from public universities in Edo State. The academic performance of first-year students, as measured by their grades in various courses, will be the dependent variable, while UME scores will serve as the independent variable. The study will further explore potential differences between male and female students regarding their UME scores and subsequent academic performance.

Data analysis will involve statistical techniques such as correlation analysis, t-tests, and regression analysis to examine the relationship between UME scores and academic grades, as well as any variations based on sex. The findings are expected to provide insights into the predictive validity of UME scores and their influence on the early academic performance of first-year students in Edo State's public universities.

The study's implications could inform educational policymakers, university administrators, and other stakeholders in higher education. If UME scores are found to be strong predictors of academic success, it could suggest the need for more emphasis on UME preparation and counseling for prospective students. Additionally, understanding any sex-based differences in the relationship between UME scores and academic performance may help identify potential gender-related factors that affect student achievement in higher education.

It is important to note that this study has limitations, including the focus on a specific state in Nigeria and the use of archival data. Future research could expand the scope to include other states and incorporate qualitative methods to gain a deeper understanding of the factors influencing academic performance among first-year university students.

Keywords: University Matriculation Examinations, academic performance, first-year students, public universities, Edo State, sex, predictive validity.
