Abstract:
This abstract highlights the causes of poor study habits among secondary school students in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State. The study explores the factors that contribute to the development of ineffective study habits and their impact on academic performance.
The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilizing surveys and interviews to gather data from a sample of secondary school students within the Awgu Local Government Area. The data collected is analyzed using thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and patterns related to poor study habits.
The findings indicate that several factors contribute to the prevalence of poor study habits among secondary school students in Awgu Local Government Area. Firstly, the lack of effective time management skills is a significant contributing factor. Many students struggle to allocate sufficient time for studying amidst their various commitments and distractions.
Secondly, inadequate study environment is identified as a significant cause of poor study habits. Students often face challenges such as a lack of quiet and conducive spaces for studying, limited access to necessary study materials, and insufficient parental support.
Furthermore, personal factors such as procrastination, lack of motivation, and low self-discipline play a role in the development of poor study habits. Students may also face social pressures and distractions, including excessive use of social media, peer influence, and extracurricular activities.
The implications of poor study habits on academic performance are significant. Students with ineffective study habits struggle to retain information, understand complex concepts, and perform well in examinations. Consequently, their overall academic achievement and future prospects may be negatively impacted.
To address the issue, it is recommended that secondary schools in Awgu Local Government Area implement interventions to promote effective study habits. These interventions may include awareness campaigns on the importance of time management, creating conducive study environments, and providing guidance and counseling services to motivate and support students.
In conclusion, this study sheds light on the causes of poor study habits among secondary school students in Awgu Local Government Area. By understanding these factors, educators, parents, and policymakers can develop targeted strategies to improve study habits, enhance academic performance, and ultimately contribute to the overall development of students in the region.
